We are chickenless

You may remember that we bought six adorable yellow chicks a few months ago.
Buy some chickens, they said... It'll be fun, they said...
My husband liked them, but he finally just got tired of the chicken waste all over the back porch. And the front porch. And in their pen.
Not to mention the high cost of chicken feed and nary an egg yet.
So, we gave six hens, a big barrel of feed, and feeders and water containers to my local egg man.
He gave us some eggs (only had a dozen), but he'll probably give us some more next time.
So, the girls are gone to a good home instead of into our freezer for future Sunday dinners.
Live and learn. Do you have live chickens?

@porwest I was kind of surprised, too, but I think Dale was just over it and wanted them gone.

I did too, instead of naming them in case we had to fry them.

I think a chicken farmer needs a lot of outside room for chickens.

I have always wanted chickens, but our dogs would not approve of it. They would have chicken dinners.

@1creekgirl Dozer barks at frozen water, I'd hate to see how he felt about chickens.

People do not realize just how much work chickens can really be. I've had chickens, you're never done. And now the feed for them has really gone up in price, all animal feeds have. That was good that you found a good home for them, and nice you sent the food and needed items, too. I am sure he appreciated it.

Keeping chickens has never been a project I wanted to take on. I enjoyed visiting grandma's chickens, even old Lizzy who slept in a planter box on the porch. I do not want first hand experience of chicken parenthood.

No, but I was watching Shark Tank one night, and some guy who designed and sold these pop up chicken coops was making a fortune. It seems a lot of people want to be in the chicken biz.

We had some old dog pens that Dale turned into a chicken coop. The pop up ones are probably handy.

My younger daughter has 6 in spite of it being against the law in the city. But as she doesn´t have a rooster there is no harm done. They layed most of the summer. Small eggs as they were young. Claudia told me that now that is winter they are laying less. Claudia uses the chicken waste to add to her compost pile.

Those cute chickens . . . sorry to hear they had to go. My daughter loves seeing those cute little chicks at the feed store, but we all know they don't stay little for long . . . there's no way we could manage chickens. So instead we have a parakeet .

Yeah, they were just more trouble than they were worth. Although they were so cute when they'd run and line up to go back into the pen like little preschoolers going back into class after recess.

Well, good for you to pass them on as they say if it was not working for you. After what you told me, I am glad that when at one time my husband in Latvia was considering getting some chickens, we never did, That would have driven me crazy, I mean, we had a big enough garden, but I could not imagine me out there going Here chicky chicky lol

I'm sorry that the chickens didn't work out. At least they went to a good home and not into the pot. No, we've never had chickens.

I wouldn't like it on my back porch either. That's good they found a new home.
