Yesterday I bought some Bubble Tea and as I was leaving the store I saw this couple probably in their mid 40s walking to their car in front of the Bubble Tea store where they had parked their car and over heard them saying that this tea beverage is not very healthy to consume as it contain a very high amount sugar in this drink and something about it may lead to long term health condition but I could not hear the rest because the couple load their bags in the car and took off. For those of you that may not know Bubble or Boba tea as they call it.It is a broad range of tea based beverage. It mostly consist of tea accompanied by black chewy tapioca balls(pearl),but it can be made with other topping as well such as Aloe vera, red bean and grass jelly.Have you heard of such thing about this beverage being unhealthy?

Drinking Boba Tea once in a while is fine. The unhealthy aspects of it the couple were mentioning were that drinking a lot of it could lead to weight gain and diabetes from the high sugar content of the tea. "Unfortunately, boba itself provides very few health benefits, though its calories and carbohydrates can provide you with a boost in energy. In most cases, boba tea contains high levels of sugar, which is linked to long-term health conditions like diabetes and obesity." Excerpt is taken from:
Find out what the research says about boba tea, who should have it, and how it may affect your health.

I love them but I also fee they are quite an indulgence and should not be an everyday thing. Just a once in a while treat.

@DevMrSamEleazar Yes,you can ask for more pearl,it costs extra or add topping which also cost more like red bean, sago, coconut jelly, agar boba, etc.Plain bubble tea you simply get milky tea with pearl.

Over here there are some reasonable prices in some shops but the more unique the flavor or if you add more topping the higher the price is.

We make boba drinks at home. No matter what the recipe, it has a lot of sugar in it - as it's supposed to be sweet. Even with healthy/natural ingredients put in/on it, if you have a sugary drink, you are still drinking loads of sugar. Just like soda, it should be limited.

@sica98 Maybe it is not exactly as sweet as soda, but still it is a sweet drink . . . too much sugar is never a good thing.

But is it really that sweet like soda or the fact that it has the same amount of sugar in a soda beverage?

Well I do love them a lot but they are actually unhealthy sugarwise. I mean it's up to you really cause they will make it the way you like it. If you ask for less sugar then it should be fine.

@sica98 The bubble tea I have is usually the Taiwanese Bubble Milk Tea. It's sweet coz they put sugar syrup in it. If I ask for low sugar, they put less syrup. I can even ask for the tea to be sweet-less.

Just like many other treats, it should not be something you do a lot. Even vegetables can be unhealthy if you over indulge.

Yes, I think bubble tea is unhealthy because they add many unhealthy ingredients inside. Besides, it is usually expensive an I don't think it is worthy to pay much to drink unhealthy drinks.

I have read that a medium-sized 500ml bubble milk tea with pearls and the full amount of sugar (you can ask less sugar) has 8 teaspoons of sugar for a total of 335 calories. Not something I would drink.

Never heard of bubble tea. Too bad they don't make an unsweetened or sugar substitute one for those who are more health conscious. I always try to follow the rule of eat or drink in moderation. I don't always succeed, since sweets are so tasty, lol. Does sound interesting enough to try though!

Driving that tea is like drinking tons of sugar. Over drinking it is a no no. But when you are someone with no issues with sugar in your health, and you exercise regularly, then it's ok to enjoy a boba once in awhile. It also makes people gain weight quite fast. And the boba tea here mostly contained artificial flavoring. That contributes to its being unhealthy as well.
