FYI for your next broccoli casserole

I love broccoli casserole and have a really good recipe for it. The family always expects it and it's one of my faves at Christmas dinner.
But...
if you ever make broccoli casserole, do not...I repeat DO NOT... use Cheetos Cheese Puffs for the crunchy topping.
I've always used crushed Town House crackers, but since Dale can't have gluten, I've been trying to come up with a different topping. Today I thought, "I need a crunchy cracker type something, why not try Cheese Puffs? I like to add a little cheese anyway."
So I crushed up some Cheese Puffs with some GF crackers, sprinkled them on top of the casserole, sprayed a little oil over it, then put it in the oven.
The casserole itself was yummy as usual. The topping was gross.
Instead of being cheesy crispy, it was kind of chewy tough.
But I live and learn hopefully. Back to my search for a good cracker topping.
Any suggestions?

You're right! I can't believe I didn't think of that. I've made croutons from GF bread which are okay, but at least crunchy.

@NJChicaa Thanks, I'll have to try that. I really dislike Velveeta and American cheese, but love cheddar. I'll search some recipes. Great idea!

@NJChicaa I just looked at some recipes and most say to bake the cheese in the oven. One said to add a little flour to the cheese and fry it in a pan. Which way do you make yours?

I was thinking perhaps Doritos nacho cheese because they are always crunchy and also used in taco casseroles

I scraped the top off and it was still good.

When I do cook for holidays, my family also like cheese, broccoli and rice casserole. I never thought to put cheetos on it, but thanks for the warning.
