A very sad and confusing day

The father of one of our coworkers passed away today, and a brother of my father's partner also went away. Since I did not directly know them, I should not have been as impacted by their passing, but I simply felt saddened by it. I was unable to comprehend the emotion, but all I could do was hope they are at peace right now and feel sorrow for the loved ones who are still alive.

I've felt like that at times. Not necessarily being close to someone but still feeling terrible about their passing. It is a very odd emotion to feel. That said sometimes we feel that way due to empathy. You don't have to know someone to feel upset. Sometimes you can just feel bad because you're human and you know what that kind of pain feels like and you feel bad for others.

Someone commented here that it might just evoke some emotion I had in the past and coincided with the news I received yesterday. Today, I felt different and I guess am back to normal again. It just felt weird yesterday like I lost someone close to me but there was none.

@sissy15 I thought back to that day and discovered that just before I received the news from Facebook, I was remembering my mother who passed away many years prior. I believe that this, combined with the fact that there were two pieces of news at the time, caused my feelings to become magnified.

@rsa101 That makes sense. It honestly just depends on the person. I usually feel empathetic whether I know a person or not just because I tend to feel what others are feeling depending on the situation.

I also felt the impact with some of our filipino mylotters who have passed away. Today, while commenting you, it's Rberon1985's birthday in heaven.

I see that you have been closed with him that is why you sincerely miss him and still remember him to this day.

@rsa101 Not really we've only seen each other twice and from those meet up events.

@Letranknight2015 At least you two have connected physically and got to know each other already. I think that it is enough to establish rapport and losing them would really impact you.

We usually empathize with other people losing someone they love because we know how it would feel it we are in their shoes. I hope the family would be able to cope peacefully and bravely with the demise.

True what confused me during that day was the intense feeling of sadness like they were a relative or very close person to them. But I somehow figured it now that it may be just a coincidence that I was thinking of a loved one that passed away and I received the news which somehow got mixed up with my feelings so my feelings were intensified. But I am ok right now.

I guess that is true. What I felt that day was like I have known them but I think I must have been thinking of loved ones and it got mixed up with the news.

Those are normal reactions. My husband’s former secretary lost her 31 year old son when his car crashed into a tree last week. I didn’t know him, but pray for him every night. I feel so awful about this and for his parents.

Oh yeah, I guess losing a son/daughter is indeed a devastating feeling. I feel like it is not normal to lose them since the parents should go first before their children. I would definitely feel that bad too if that would happen to anyone.

@rsa101 I agree. The loss of a child must be the worst thing in the life of a parent.

I think most deaths, where we are acquainted with the person or their family, impact on us to some degree.

We feel sad whenever we hear people passing away though we are not related to them or have not known them.

You would feel sad because you know the persons who have lost a relative. And when they mourn you will mourn with them.

Yes but the sadness I felt like I know them. It is something different. I just thought maybe I knew the news at the same time that is why I felt bad this way.
