Lightening Struck our Home!

We had lightening strike the top of our 80 foot tree early last month. The current ran down the length of our tree, went through the root system, came out of the ground (throwing rocks and dirt all over) and hit the side of our garage, blowing out our garage door openers. Our TV, our router, and one of our monitors was also destroyed electrically. Thankfully, our insurance company came through and paid to have our garage door openers and all of our blown electronics replaced, and they even paid some for the tree to be cut down. It was kind of a drag to have to open our garage doors manually for a few weeks, but we just got the garage door openers replaced yesterday and have been enjoying having the use of them! I'm sorry about the damage, but thankful you all didn't get hurt. A few years ago, lightening came through an electrical outlet and into my hand. It was a weird feeling, but didn't hurt me.

Holy smoly, that musta scared the bageezas outta ya, I didn't know lightening would do that but so far where I am there haven't been any major thunderstorms and not that many trees here either. Good thing you have a good insurance company.

Things can be replaced, people can't. Good luck and be thankful no one was hurt.

Lightning strikes are very scary to deal with. At least no one was hurt in this incident outside of the damage of your electrical equipment.

Seeing your post I wondered how many electronics you lost. Sometimes this also destroys other appliances, like refrigerators, freezers, washers and driers. If not the strike itself, the power surge when power is restored. I learned that this year.

Thank goodness it wasn't worse. That's one of my biggest fears, lightening hitting our house.

That is quite scary. You are all lucky that you were not injured. We had something similar happen years ago. A car hit a hydro pole that had 2 sets of lines on it, the top line bounced down and hit the bottom line which sent currents back into everyone's homes. We were out at a Christmas party and our babysitter told us that she literally saw sparks coming out of the wall sockets. Anything plugged in was fried-computers, garage door openers, televisions, electric ranges, everything. There was a class action law suit against the power company that had the lines like that on the poles and once that happened, thanks to the school who lost so many electronics, us little people all got paid. It was over 6 months until that happened.

Oh my goodness, I know how scary this is, it happened to my grandparents many years ago. I hope you are insured and they will pay for the damages.
