One of the few skill sets I have

I've discussed this before but I don't have a lot of skills. I'm just kind of mediocre at a lot of things. I may not be the worst but I'm always very far from the best. One of the handful of things that I do semi-decent at is finding people online. I know where to search and how to search. I once found someone's full name and address and past history with only a nickname they went by. I can't do this every time because it really comes down to their online presence and the knowledge I have of them. My husband tells me it's kind of creepy but never seems to have a problem asking me to find information for him. I'm the one who found his biological father and his siblings along with a lot of other information even the family wasn't aware of. I use some of my genealogy skills to help me because while genealogy mostly helps you find information on those who are already dead it can also help you find information on the living too even though the information is fairly limited. I can usually find things like their full name, parents, and state they lived in when they were born. I use FB and google a lot too to help me get information. There are also court sites that you can use to find out if they have any sort of record and sometimes you'll find information in the paper and/or obituaries. You'd be amazed what you can dig up but you just have to have the knowledge of where to start and how. It's not especially difficult but does take a lot of common sense and some common knowledge and the ability to use a computer. Knowing a lot about your state or another states public records helps a lot too because you can find things like home records.

I don't know that I'm quite that confident in my abilities to make money off of it because it really comes down to the person and if I wasn't able to find someone I wouldn't feel good about taking their money. I'm not quite a pro but I do ok. I've done it for free for a few people.

@sissy15 You can offer your services and write a bill only when you've been successful. In this way you wouldn't have a reason to feel bad. The fee should be clear from the beginning.

That is a nice skill to have. You looked like you can be an investigator/detective of some sort since you know where to dig information that is almost lost in time already.

I don't think my skills are quite investigator good but I do ok. I don't think I would do as well finding someone outside of the US as things are often very different in other countries with the way things work.

@sissy15 Yeah maybe with proper training and honing that could have been an alternate career you have taken maybe if you finish criminology or something in college. I think what you have is a raw talent/skill that can be developed further. I think there are a few that have the skills of tracing a person.

@rsa101 Maybe, but I don't have the money to go to college nor do I want to be that far in debt. I'll stick with my current job. I do this mostly as a challenge sometimes because I think it's fun to see if I can find someone. There are still a few people I can't really find I mean I have their address but they aren't really online on social media that I can find anyway. Some people really don't have much of an online presence. I have always been curious about what happened to someone but I don't want to reach out to them due to the circumstances we stopped talking but I was always curious if he mended things with his wife (he didn't cheat at least not with me but again it's a long story). I definitely don't want to reach out but always hoped they worked things out but I wasn't able to find much. I did find his wife but there was no real information. He doesn't seem to have a social media account at least not that I can find. That's one of the biggest examples I have of not being able to find the information I wanted.

You have a good skill as some people do not know where to begin in searching.

Thank you, and a lot of it really is common sense. If a person has an FB account you can find a lot out that way.

Most of the ones here do not at least not directly on that site You can look them up on auditors sites for the count/state they are in. The sites here will show the last time it was bought or sold and the year but won't show the names of the owners.
