Another MRI adventure

But not me this time. I think I wrote before about our grandson Nathan's back surgery when he was four. It started when his mother Rachelle noticed a tiny dimple just above his anus in his back that didn't appear to have an ending. She took him to his Pediatrician who referred him to the Children's Hospital at Chapel Hill, NC. Nathan was in the process of many different tests when Rachelle passed away from a massive heart attack just before Nathan turned two. That's when I went from being grandma to being mama. Robert (his dad who is our son) and I spent many many trips to doctors' offices, labs, hospitals trying to diagnose the problem. These included several MRIs where one time they didn't sedate him long enough and he woke up in the middle of the tube. He was naturally terrified, screaming, pulled out the IV tube, had blood all over and crying his eyes out. They wouldn't let us stay in the MRI room, so my poor baby thought we had abandoned him. I cried almost as much as he did. Then when the nurse was carrying him back to his room where we had to wait, she bumped his head on the door! I'll write about the rest of the ordeal another time, but that was Nathan's experience with one of his MRIs.

Poor little fella. That’s so sad.My son had to stay several months at St Jude and it’s terrifying for a young child.

Oh, I'm sure that was a very difficult time for you all. It's so hard to see our babies suffering.

@1creekgirl It’s the hardest thing in the world. But when they need care you have no choice.

I’m guessing he has spina bifida? My nephew was born with one of those holes but it doesn’t go more then a half inch deep or so. A friend’s daughter has a light case of it and would have seizures anytime she got a fever. Sounds like a rough time your poor grand child has had losing his mom and having to go through the ordeal you described.

@1creekgirl oh my gosh wow that is so fortunate to have discovered that early on so no damage was done. Does he have any health issues now or totally healthy?

@shaggin He had migraines as a child, but seems to have pretty much outgrown them, praise God. Except for ADD, he's very healthy. Very intelligent, but has trouble focusing. Hope he'll do well at college...moves into his dorm next week.

It was a tethered cord which was a very mild form of spina bifida. He had surgery and has been fine ever since. The doctor said that sometimes it's only discovered when a child starts having trouble walking or bladder problems and then the problems are not usually reversible. We all praised God that it was corrected before any problems.

Poor baby needed some professionals to do these procedures! What a horrible experience, for a baby:(

My son was more mad than sad. I didn't blame him at all. I understand accidentally bumping a door, but there was no excuse that he wasn't given enough anesthesia to keep him asleep.

@1creekgirl One lady had this experience during brain surgery, for a tumor! Neglect such as this is unthinkable and so unprofessional

There were other tests that were really awful, but God mercifully healed him through the skill of his surgeon (who was the head of the Pediatric dept). Nathan's a healthy young man...even that major back surgery didn't slow him down!

Yes, his surgery at the age of four was a great success, never a moment of trouble with recovery. He was a preemie...2 1/2 pounds...but he's a strong healthy teenager ready to start college next week.

Yes, even though there were some other tests that were terrible, he had the back surgery and thank God never had any of the possible complications from a tethered cord. That little monkey was jumping all around not long after he came home.

That must have been so traumatic for Nathan to have woken up in the middle of the procedure. That was so careless of the nurse as well! Nathan is so lucky to have you. I'm so sorry she has lost her mama at a tender age.

Poor little boy. I cannot go inside that tube because of my claustrophobia, I am glad we have an open MRI here now.

Thanks, that wasn't even all of it. But so thankful he's grown to be a strong healthy teenager.
