Today the 11th of August 22 ,Rakshabandhan is being celebrated throughout India. To whomever we tie this Rakhi we pledge for that person's longevity, happiness and safety. It's not that only sisters tie this band in the hands of their brothers and pray for their long life in turn brothers pledge to protect their sisters as long as they live. Mothers can tie this thread in their children's hands for their long life and a life without obstacles and danger. Similarly two sisters can tie this Rakhi in each other's hands. I have seen my friends from Rajasthan tieing this Rakhi both in the hands of their brothers and sisters and their mothers in turn tied the Rakhi in their hands. My husband used to get two Rakhis till 2019 and I tied them in my sons hands if they were at home or kept them in my prayer room and prayed for their well being. In Mathura, Vrindavan in U.P and in Mayapur in West Bengal this day is celebrated as Jhulan Jatra. A swing of gold and silver is made and its swung with the idols of Lord Krishna, Radha and her Gopis(Radha's friends) in it. It signifies the child like friendship of Lord Krishna, Radha and her Gopis. This continues for three days to mark the end of rainy season (Shavan) and the setting in of autumn. This day sends the message of love and friendship unconditionally.

It is a lovely custom and tradition you have. The Rakhi resembles a thing from my Mother's old country of Ireland..it is called the brooch for good luck. Some have jewels also to gift one another.

That's lovely. I think it also brings luck after the thread/band is tied in the person's hand.
