Last-minute Prom dress

So Big One has officially finished school! I can’t quite get my head around her being at high school yet, never mind having got through it! But nevertheless here we are, she got through her exams and then it was time to celebrate. When I was at school I remember the last day being a total non-event. People just disappeared in dribs and drabs. A few of the more enthusiastic leavers threw some eggs at each other. I remember sitting on the fence gazing over the empty field and thinking ‘So this is it’. Nowadays things are a bit more upbeat, Big One’s school organised a ‘prom’. Now I don’t want to sounds like a real grouch, I think it’s nice that they have a party after all the hard work and stress, but you hear stories of parents spending hundreds of pounds on expensive outfits, stretched limousines and all sorts of ridiculous things. We made it clear we had no intention of doing that for what is basically a glorified school disco, but we would contribute what we considered a reasonable amount. Big One would have to contribute the rest for whatever she wanted. After she bought the ticket – at the last possible moment - nothing else happened for a couple of weeks. Eventually I felt I ought to say something, because although I didn’t want to make a big deal out of the question of what to wear, I really didn’t want her to come to me the night before the prom and say ‘where can I get a dress for tomorrow?’ So we had a little chat about various options, and we looked through my collection of dresses (all of which I either made myself or bought from a charity shop). Although she liked a couple of them, she’s so slim that they all just fell off her! So I said that I would have a look round next time I was in town. I’m not much of a shopper but I traipsed all over town to see what was out there. Only one 'high street' place had any evening type of dresses, and they only had a few styles (all quite similar) and only two or three colours, and I couldn't really imagine Big One in any of them, but I took some photos to show her anyway. Prices were between £125 and £195. Finally I went to a specialist boutique that provides evening wear of all sorts. They had quite a range of colours and several styles and plenty of sizes and they will alter your choice to fit if necessary. They let me have a look and take some pictures to show Big One, but if she wanted to try any on she would have to make an appointment. Prices ranged from £195 to £295. They showed me a couple of styles they said were 'very popular with the young ones this year'. Of course the snag with that is that several people may end up showing up in the same dress. They also had men's evening wear of course, as we had also considered that - a tailcoat was about £120. I showed Big One the pictures and she decided she wasn't willing to spend that much either. By now there was less than a week to go, not enough time to send for something and risk it not fitting or being otherwise unsuitable, so the other options (apart from visiting every charity shop within a 20-mile radius!) were to make something - and we didn't have much time for that either and Big One has only done a limited amount of sewing so can't manage anything too complicated - or to improvise in some other way. Finally we decided to buy a top of some sort and then make a skirt to go with it, skirts are usually not too tricky to make, the bodice part of a dress is the most difficult. I had seen one shop that had nice strappy tops, quite reasonably priced, so we both went there and Big One found one she liked and that looked quite 'dressy'. Then we went to the local fabric shop and found a relatively easy pattern for a skirt with a gauzy overskirt, and Big One chose some fancy fabric for the top layer and plain black for the underneath. After that it was rather a mammoth effort to make the skirt (with help from me) and in the end I had to stitch the final hem while Big One was actually getting ready, but to cut a long story short, we did it! The result was a nice outfit that didn’t look out of place without breaking the bank, and was also unique and very much her style. Most importantly, she had a great evening with her friends, which was the whole point of course. And she has been inspired to try making some more outfits in future (hopefully a bit further in advance this time!) which is definitely a good thing in my opinion. That is a lovely outfit! I'm sure she was congratulated on it a lot that night! I took Pretty shopping for her prom dress but told her I wasn't spending a fortune on it. (Junior Prom and Senior Prom needed separate dresses, so we went shopping for fancy dresses two years in a row. Dress shopping is a pain in my tush!!!) After looking at what the stores in the mall had, she couldn't make up her mind. Then a nice sales clerk asked me if we'd looked in the clearance aisle... I didn't know they had a clearance aisle... so off we went and found a beautiful black dress that was reduced from $300 to $95. Pretty liked it and I liked the price so we got it. Her senior year, we headed to the clearance aisle first and found a deep blue full length dress that looked great on her. I wasn't quite as lucky with the price on it but paid the $200 without visibly wincing... with Pretty telling me we could try other stores if we couldn't afford that much... Then we needed to fancy up her hair... She didn't want to go to a beautician and asked if I'd try to make her hair look "fancy". I'm not a hair dresser but I told her I'd try. The afternoon before the prom I had her take a shower and put on a robe so I could mess with her hair. I told her I thought it would look good if I took sections of her hair and twisted each section until it pulled up against her scalp and make a sort of bun with it using bobby pins to hold it in place. She wasn't sure but told me to try it and we'd see what it looked like. (I don't know if you can see her hair but this is the same style we did for prom and her Junior Prom dress. She wore it to a Christmas party her Senior year and had me put her hair up in the same style again for that, too...) She liked the hair style and had me do it again for her Senior Prom. (I tried to find the photos I took before she left for prom but can't find them.) Pretty in her prom dress at Christmas. Photo is mine.

@Fleura You're welcome. Thank you. It took over an hour and a half to do her hair. I couldn't believe it when she told me how long I'd been working with it! (I was trying so hard to make it look good for her I forgot the time.) Pretty doesn't really care about wearing dresses. She prefers jeans and a nice shirt. (When she doesn't raid my closet and "borrow" one or more of my tee shirts. ) She did ask for a dress she saw at Walmart two years ago... I asked her where she'd wear it to and she said she just wanted to look pretty... Of course I bought it for her. (How could I say no to that?) I've shown her wearing that dress on myLot several times. But I'll post it here, just in case you haven't seen it. Yeah, I had a suit jacket I wore two or three time before giving it away. I don't go to fancy dinners or parties so don't need more than a decent shirt and jeans, anyway. And mostly, I wear a tee shirt with jeans every day. (Jean shorts and sandals during the summer.) Pretty two years ago. Photo is mine.

@DaddyEvil Everyone deserves to look pretty sometimes! And yes that is a cute dress and no I haven't seen it before. Like you two, most days I wear a T-shirt or long-sleeved top of some sort with trousers, but I do like the chance to dress up when occasion demands - even if only so I can show people that I do clean up quite well

Thanks very much! Yes she did get plenty of compliments so that was a bonus! Pretty looks great in that outfit, and the hair looks good although I can't really see the detail. Glad she got to wear the dress more than once too. The blue dress sounds lovely as well. And obviously you have an unrealised talent for hair-dressing! Being a woman necessitates dress-shopping (or obtaining dresses in some other way!) which, as you say, is a pain. On the plus side, you get to dress up in exciting fancy outfits, but on the down side you can't wear the same thing over and over (at least, not unless you go to social events with totally different groups of people). Being a man means you don't really get to wear anything very interesting (unless you're some crazy pop star going to a red-carpet event) but you can just buy one dinner jacket and wear the same one to every single event for 30 years and in the main, no-one will even comment on it!

@fleura At least she was confident of not turning up on the same shop bought dress as anyone else - every girl’s nightmare. I only recently discovered that many women have an alternative outfit in the car (or even in their handbag) that they can change into at a wedding if some other person arrives in their first choice. My daughter organised her class Prom/Formal or whatever. We knew very little about it till a pink fire engine with very raunchy firemen hanging out of it turned up at our house and out she scampered squealing with delight when she heard the siren. Don’t know what the neighbours made of it. However, your daughter’s dress looks exquisite. Well done you and her.

@Fleura I only discovered about the alternative outfit when I wondered aloud one night about the size of my daughter’s handbag. My wife heard and explained. She did the same as a teenager. Boys have it so easy.

@xFiacre When we were teenagers me and my friends often made our own outfits. At the weekend we used to go to a place that sold fabric remnants, then we would make something and wear it to our next night out on the following Thursday (there was a nightclub that used to allow entry for 1p on a Thursday night and they would give you a £1 drink voucher free. That was enough to buy one drink in those days and we could make it last most of the night!)

Yes it was a bespoke creation! I have never heard of anyone taking an alternative outfit with them, but I guess I don't move in those sort of circles. It's not something I really have to worry about because most of my 'special' outfits I have made, or I bought from a charity shop (many in the US), or they are just so many years old that nobody else could possibly be still wearing the same thing!

That gauzy layer really makes the outfit! I bet she got a lot of envious compliments on it.

Thank you! Yes she did get a lot of positive comments so came home very happy. Now she wants to shorten it a bit so she can wear it to dance in.

It is stressful to do things in a hurry when there is a very little time, but the result is beautiful. The color of the upper skirt goes so well with the nice top, you did a great job here.

Thank you! Since we bought the top first, we opted for one with several colours so it would be easier to choose a toning fabric. But then Big One coldn't resist the rainbow colours anyway!

Thank you! Yes there was no chance of bumping into anyone in the same outfit, and she does like to be different to the masses!
