I always feel rather icky after posting something like the "Online Cannibal Fetish". But, hey, we need to know. Sure I may post some rather horrific things at times. But, that is the truth about our world.
Sure, we could just live in a world like my girlfriend gave her oldest daughter. She kept her totally protected and never told her the real facts about life and the world. She ended up leaving home early and got raped. I let my daughter know about Charlie Manson and people like him. She has never been taken advantage of in that way or many others. I am proud of that fact.
I believe we all need to know the ugliness in the world as well as the lovely side. Sure it is hard to take at times but, we are better off and will enjoy the good more for the knowledge. It may always be looming in the back of your mind but, you will be better off having the knowledge.
Your thoughts.

My daughter has tight reigns on Aubrey, their youngest child. They bend over backwards, to protect her from all the evils in life. And whatever she does, they tell her how perfect she has done. Will this hurt her, in the long run? Yes, it certainly will!

@sallypup She's an A student, extremely smart and talented. Aubrey needs to learn about the dark side of life, sometime soon before she becomes a teen.

That is scary. Too tight a rein on a child will many times make them revolt.

Agreed. I think knowing all sides of reality serves us better in order to deal with this world. I've always made it a point to bring up and discuss various "uglies" with my kids . . . so at least they are aware. In this insane world, everyone has to learn to keep their eyes open

@much2say ........Good idea. I think that the more we are in communication with our kids about like and what's out there to be aware of the better.

@celticeagle Right. But so much can happen to young kids too - oh those sick predators out there. My daughter's friend went through something via an internet predator, so we had some "discussions" about these things early on.

Yes, and kids need all the information they can get to approach life a positive and realistic manner.

Yes, I agree with you. I never told my sons about specific crimes, only that really bad people exist in the world that want to do other people harm. I educated them about stranger danger and not to necessarily trust people until they prove themselves trustworthy. I agree, they've got to know.

@celticeagle I actually find true crime fascinating, though it can be shocking. I have read a lot on Charles Manson. If we understand such extremes we can help prevent suchg tragedies in future.

I do too. And, I must admit, I even like the darker side of things. Charles Manson was such a character. The girls that followed him were pathetic at best. I agree that understanding such horrors can help us to prevent more of them. If we don't understand them then how can we stop them? Impossible in my book.

Yes, do everything we can to stop it. If we don't know and try to understand then how can we know how to act against it?

@celticeagle You are right, this is what I always tell to those who say "I do not even want to read the news..." You must know to try to do better.

I agree with you. I have a slightly Pollyannaish philosophy in spite having grown up on the South Side of Chicago. But I do try to "protect" the young children I work with. Even with them, though, I might say something like, "When people are sad inside, they can act mean. Jose might be having a bad day. And that's why he acted mean to you." With Horse Jr., we discussed why there are bad drivers, why some people are angry, and so on. So I guess I try to be realistic while maintaining an overall positive attitude.

I lived a sheltered life and pretty much went a little wild when I moved away from home. It's better to expose your children to everything that's out in the world.

The children should know the real facts of life so that they may be left innocent and be duped by canny person for their advantage.
