Monday Evening Musings

Well, the mammogram is over for another year. My chest is starting to re-inflate, slowly. Seriously, some friends replied to my Facebook post, and we did agree that the machinery seems to have gotten…shall we say, “more tolerable” and “less painful” than it was in the past. Truth be told, it doesn’t matter how painful the test is, that only lasts a few minutes, which is NOTHING compared to having undetected breast cancer. After the mammogram I treated myself to some clothes! I found some shorts that were priced 50% off, (love these end-of-summer sales), so I grabbed four pair! They’re finishing up washing right now. If you remember last week I said our state fair was starting and I was NOT going. Saturday night proved that to be a wise decision. There was an “incident,” as they called it initially. Apparently some brats (the humans, not the food) had a noisemaker that sounded like a gun and set it off on the midway. It caused a panic, an early closing to the fair, and nine arrests of the people the police believe are responsible for the “prank.” IF things go well I’ll head to Fort Wayne this weekend to visit with everyone for the state finals tournament. I’ve only made an appearance at one tournament this year, and that was the one where we had the sudden, tragic death of one of our players from a heart attack. We have named a tournament in his memory, and I’m going to propose at the meeting (we have a tour meeting after the first day’s playing every year) that we name the finals trophies for Monte for the pros and for Bill Hammonds for the amateurs. We don’t get to play the Hammonds Memorial every year, which is sad. I’d like to see a more permanent way of honoring both men who meant so much to us. After that, I might run around for a week and see things. I’d like to go to Buffalo and see the USS The Sullivans, which sank in the harbor she was moored in earlier this year. It was a World War II ship named in honor of the five Sullivan brothers who all perished together on the USS Juneau during World War II (if you remember from my visit to the Sullivan Brothers Museum in Iowa last year). These ships, when they get de-commissioned and become floating museums, receive NO government funding. The nonprofit organizations, memberships, and the admission fees pay for their upkeep. The Buffalo news stations have reported that the ship is re-opened for tours. Of course, if I go I’ll take y’all along. I’m glad to see the YouTube channel CritterVision is back up. I wrote about this a couple of years ago as one of my favorite channels, where a couple in the Low Country of South Carolina put food out and got all kinds of visitors (all captured on a 24/7 live feed). So that’s it for the evening. Y’all have a great evening!! Here’s information about the USS The Sullivans in Buffalo:

Yes, my last mammo was slightly less excruciating than previous ones. And if I remember correctly (and not dreamt it) that would be the last one I'd have to endure as "they" don't do routine scrinching, I mean, screenings for women after the age of 70.

@FourWalls Stage zero? What's that? They found something but it was nothing?

I’ll never turn it down. My next-door-neighbor’s cancer was caught at stage zero thanks to God and a mammogram.

@BarBaraPrz — I’m thinking they found some cells trying to form a cancer union or something. I’d never heard of stage zero.

My doctor is pestering me to get another mammogram, since it's been a few years. I remember back when they REALLY mashed ya. Glad everything checked out okay for you!

They don’t mash so badly anymore. I’ve had technicians say it’s harder on people with nothing to mash (like guys who have to have them done…both my dad and my brother had to have a mammogram because of something in their chest area). Oh, please do get a mammogram (and I don’t even know your doctor )! I preach on them and colonoscopies.

@FourWalls I've been a little shy of the plague (that's my excuse, anyway). I've had three, all told...not very many, I know! I think it's been at least 5 years since the last one. My husband wants us to go together for a colonoscopy consultation (we'd have to get them on different dates, of course).

I have benign masses in my chest which are very painful; and the mammogram is always such a painful necessity. I'm glad yours is over. Glad you snagged some bargains; and I'm glad you didn't go to the fair!!! Do you plan on seeing the falls when you go to Buffalo? We were going to go to Niagara this year; but that didn't pan out. Have you ever watched some of the waterholes in Africa? It's cool to see the animals come at night and get a drink of water. Big hugs.

Have a nice time at your tournament and good luck bringing about the changes. Maybe a gofundme would be helpful?

Oh, that isn’t necessary, it would just be an “okay” from the tour director to name the trophies.

Thankfully I've never found mammograms too bad. Certainly uncomfortable but not really painful. And, as you say, it's a small price to pay for what could be a life-saving event.

I am glad you got your yearly mammogram taken care of. I look forward to going along with you to Fort Wayne for the tournament and sightseeing. I can't imagine losing any child let alone 5 sons in war.

Worst of all, five sons at once. I applied for “brother duty,” and was granted it (as my master chief said, “Anybody dumb enough to ask for Norfolk is gonna get it” ); however, we weren’t at the same command, just in the same area. Back then it wouldn’t have mattered because women weren’t allowed on ships, but we couldn’t have been in the same command because we were our parents’ only two children.
