I of all people, am a fab of anything free. So last weekend while we were walking home after tea, when we saw a sign saying "free to take". I grabbed the biggest one without hesitation. I am not even sure what it is or how to cook it but I just did. Google reverse look-up said it's a zucchini. I initially thought it was a courgette. Are they not the same? Now looking for inspiration on how to cook it. It is massive so I have several dishes with this I think.

Zucchini and courgette are the same vegetable the Americans call them zucchini, while the British call them courgette (same as the French). It is so big you can make it stuffed, it is good.

Zucchini and courgette are different from each although they pertain to the same vegetable family.Courgette means the same thing, only in French. Zucchini is the common term used in American English speaking countries.

Thanks for such a thorough explanation. Do you know how to cook them? Have you tried them before?

We usually slice the zucchini here over, then put it in a flour batter and fry it.

I prefer the smaller zuchinni but love them all. You can make all sorts of dishes with them from stuffed to puddings; from fried (dipped in beaten eggs and bread crumbs) to just steamed al dente and eaten with mayo.

We call it a courgette and that is a rather large one. I usually cut them into slices and bake them in the oven until slightly caramelised for extra flavour. They can turn to mush though. Great you got it for free!

I got the biggest one I could find. Do you add sugar on it? As you say caramelised?

@flapiz No sugar. The natural sugar in the courgette caramelises. Just add some seasoning and drizzle some olive oil and bake on a high heat, turning them over to caramelise both sides. Tasty! Something else you could do is make fritters with it but you need additional ingredients. Grate some of the courgette and then mix it with flour and egg plus some of your favourite herbs and spices and maybe cheese and then fry until golden on both sides. Nigella Lawson has a great recipe for this which I’ve made before.

That is a huge zucchini. But boy are they tasty. A million ways to cook and enjoy them, so I hope you can find something to do. Roasted is delicious but I like them sauteed as well.

Hahaha I picked the biggest one. At the moment I think frying and sautee sounds very attractive. I have no idea how it would taste but everyone seems to like it so I'll give it a whirl.

@flapiz I don't think you can go wrong, really. I like mine a bit crunchy and the wife prefers them a bit soft.

Mostly they're called zucchini here. That's nice that someone was giving them away for free.

Yeah sometimes they sell them and sometimes they just give them away. Human kindness. I cooked it today and kinda regretted not taking more.
