Another week's 'work' for us

We are house-sitting at a property in Grass Valley, Western Australia. This afternoon, a vehicle drove in, turned around and drove out again before we could get outside to see who it was. This seemed a bit strange but there was nothing we could do about it. However, this evening someone called out from the back door and it was the neighbour. He needs a house-sitter for a week late in September. As luck would have it, it's the only free week we have until late in October so we much be meant to do it. He had called around before but, because our car is in the garage, he thought there was no-one home. This time, he’d seen smoke rising from the kitchen chimney. We’re going to his place tomorrow to check out what needs to be done. We do know there are two dogs and a few chooks (chickens). It will all depend on whether their internet service is good enough as we’ll be needing to process and upload photos from the endurance rides. Word of mouth works very well sometimes. The photo is mine of the front door to the house which no-one uses. But aren’t they magnificent wagon wheels on either side of the door?

Isn't it weird that the only people who use the front door are people who don't know us? That's how it was when I was a kid on the farm. Everybody always came to the back door, hollered into the house that they were coming in, then grabbed a cup of coffee and then found mom or dad, whichever one they came looking for. I think, but could be mistaken, that those are Conestoga wagon wheels. And yes, they are very nice looking.

I might have a look on the wheels but I doubt there will be any identifying marks.

@JudyEv Yeah, the hubs are the only real distinguishing feature on those wheels.

@DaddyEvil I had a look at the photo but it looks pretty much like any other of the big wagon wheels.

Looks like you are getting to be a good house sitter since this will be the 2nd home you will have to house sit. I am just wondering if you are compensated for doing so.

@JudyEv I see how about the food will you buy them out? It seems an enjoyable stay since you wake up in a different house for a week then off to another one if there is one in need of house sitter.

@rsa101 We took our own food but were told to use whatever we needed. There were carrots and cabbage in the garden that we could have if we wanted.

No, we are not getting paid. We don't have to do much and we're living in their house using their electricity, etc so we're happy just to enjoy the experience. It might be different if we had a lot of responsibility.

It should indeed. We like being in the country and there are no real costs involved. We don't get paid but we don't do much either.

@LindaOHio There is very little to do and we're using their house, electricity, water so it seems a bit rough to charge them for it. They did offer.

Wow, that looks like a great place. I love brick buildings. When we lived on the farm - sometimes there'd be people drive up in the driveway. I think they thought the place was abandoned (you couldn't see the house from the road) - sometimes it was teenagers. I hope you get to work on those photos.

Opportunists no doubt check out places from time to time. This guy couldn't see a vehicle so thought we weren't home but the car was in the garage.

@JudyEv Ah yes, always wise to keep an eye out for those type suspicious types. I know sometimes I keep a log if I see something odd around mom's place or the apartment I live at. Vehicle plates if I can get it, make and model of car or any other notes... have never had to use it happily
