Klepto Cats

I just finished watching my recording of Cats 101. One segment was about kleptomaniac cats. It was cuter and funnier than anything!!! They highlighted several different cats from across the country. It was amazing what they stole. They would take things from small stuffed animals to gloves to even hardware for building a storage shed. There was no rhyme or reason to what they took, it was just what they looked at and liked. There were videos of the cats stealing bras and hauling them home. Then videos of them stealing lady's panties and shirts. It was hysterical watching them holding the stuff in their mouths and dragging it home between their legs. The cats would also steal towels...even bath towels!!! There were gloves added to the mix. The cats owners would try to return the items without much luck. They stacked the ill-gotten booty and tagged it with how many of each item and tacked the information to the stacks. It isn't one particular breed of cat that turns out to be a kleptomaniac, it's just something that they develop on their own. It was a fun segment to watch, I can just imagine the cat's person and their reaction to finding a bra, or something that wasn't from their home, laying on the floor of their living room. One owner is a (in my opinion, extremely cute) single gentleman who lives alone except for the cat. The video team was busily filming him holding the bra up to his chest; then asked the question "What am I supposed to do with a bra?" The next video was of a cat (different cat, much smaller) hauling home a towel. It was a medium sized terry cloth hand towel, but it was much larger than the cat. The cat was staggering with the towel between both his front feet and his hind feet. It was through sheer determination that the cat was able to haul the towel home, the cat was also well known for bringing home terry cloth bath towels!!! I can imagine the sight of the towel being drug between the four feet and his only being about 7 inches tall (he was still considered a kitten.) and maybe four or five pounds at most. I have had cats that retrieved for me, but not the kind that were klepto kitties. Of course, since Petey and Jonesy don't get to go outside I don't have that problem-yet. Fortunately, I saved the video and can watch it again. It was really fun and I had to share the fun with all the myLot friends.

It's only Chilly now, but I've had cats bring me things despite being indoor-only. When I lived at home, my cat, Precious, decided to steel a turkey.

I would have adored, loved, treasured being there to see Precious hauling a turkey!!! It had to be totally priceless to see!!! People keep saying that animals don't think or have a sense of humor. I had one that would steal my father's boxer shorts. He couldn't figure out how come he kept coming up "short" on undershorts until he looked under my bed. My cat had seen him in just his boxers and with Father's scrawny legs it wasn't an attractive sight. So, on laundry day, when Mom was folding father's shorts the cat would wait until Mom's back was turned and she would steal the shorts. Each laundry day the cat would make off with two or three pairs....

Cats can sure be characters. I saw one Cats101 that had daredevil cats. One cat that could jump 7 stories. It was amazing. I still have it on my DVR.

@celticeagle I have found that IF I watch closely I can understand what Petey and Jonesy want. Around 9 p.m. Petey starts nagging that it's time to go to bed. He also lets me know when I've done too much and will "hold" me down in my chair so I don't get up and so things I shouldn't. Jonesy has let it be known that she was abused, and she has gained the trust where she will cuddle with me at night. When she's really happy you can hear her purr through the whole apartment. She also will grab my ankles when she wants attention, although she is very careful of the left one. She also is very fussy about the litter box, and if she isn't happy with how clean it is she will stand outside it and meow at the top of her voice until I clean it to her satisfaction. I guess she doesn't want to potty in an outhouse!

@celticeagle As kids we used to see people being treated special and having things done for them...then you break a serious bone (like and ankle) and find out that they are darned painful and uncomfortable. PLUS, you are laid up and can't do your normal activities. Also, you don't realize how unromantic they are until you break a major bone. I was stopped by Petey last night, he ended up being peed on from stopping in front of me. I had to wash his head and shoulders down. He wasn't happy about it, but he wasn't happy about the situation. It's hard to explain to the cat that you peed on him because he stopped you on a quick trip to the bathroom. Oh well, he's none the worse for wear. L & H's

I have a dog that is right now. If clothing or towels come up missing in the house we know to look in her hiding places.

I am glad that none of the cats I have here are kleptos, but I did have my Ringo jump into the fridge last night.

That would be a great video. I've seen little mother cats dragging home a big rabbit and she will be straddling the body as she drags it along,
