Even weeds have their beauty

While out taking photos last weekend, I saw this pretty plant. It’s only a weed but it is really attractive. Today is another lovely day here and later we’ll be having lunch outside with two of Vince’s brothers and a sister-in-law. There is an outdoor setting at our house-sit and we’ll use that. We could go a bit further down the hill but there isn’t really enough room there for five – not to eat a meal there anyway. We need to feed the sheep and cows a bit later but we’re waiting for Vince’s brother to surface (meaning ‘to get up’). We had a great night last night and polished off a couple of bottles of wine, ending up with a nip of Cointreau. I think that, apart from a nice lunch, we’ll be taking it easy today.

That is an absolutely GORGEOUS plant/weed!!! Do you know what it is, by any chance? (As pretty as it is, it’s probably something like poison ivy or dangerous to pets. )

I can tell you it isn't poison ivy. Poison ivy is a vine and I'm deathly allergic to it.

It's fescue, a fancy grass.

@BarBaraPrz — it’s beautiful. We certainly don’t have fescue of that quality here in America. Even our “bluegrass” is more a slight hint of blue hue than full-blown colorful grass the way this is.

Thanks. We did have an enjoyable lunch and now Vince's brother has gone home again so it's just the two of us again.

Some weeds are even prettier then what are planted and not considered weeds. Is this something you are doing now for extra income the house sitting?

It's more or less a favour for a friend. We're not getting paid anything but it's not costing us anything either.

This one is a beautiful weed, it is a long time that I do not buy Cointreau, pleasant orange taste.

@JudyEv I am so sorry you cannot find it. I would send some packages to you, but I am almost sure that the Customs would confiscate, as it is food.

@LadyDuck I was soaking golden sultanas in gin once and having several tablespoonsful each day as it's supposed to stave off arthritis. Unfortunately I can't find golden sultanas any more. Maybe ordinary ones would be nearly as good.

@judyev I wonder who decides which plants are officially weeds?

Any plant is a weed if it's growing where you don't want it. Grass in the lawn is desirable, grass in the flower bed or veg patch is a terrible weed!

@Fleura is probably right. Arum lilies often feature here as a cut flower but in this area, they are a real pest.

I'm assuming you mean the fescue and not the dandelion-type weed beside it.

Is that what it's called? Thanks for that. I didn't mean the dandelion-type so I must have meant the fescue. lol

Some grasses can be very attractive even if they don't always have pretty flowers.

Weeds are plants that people don't want, I was told. Probably true, some 'weeds' are very nice looking. I have some in the front planter that I am not sure are from the wild flower seeds of last year or just random plants

Exactly. Those blue agapanthus that are so trendy here at the moment are common weeds in South Africa!

As I mentioned in another comment, arum lilies and freesias are now growing wild in some areas here and are regarded as weeds.

Some weeds are pretty. The wild ragweed has beautiful yellow flower and frost flowers a pretty blue. I like the look of broom sage too.

Enjoy your lunch. I liked the term surface up. Is that a commonly used one there? That's a beautiful weed and if it's not harmful to the main plants in the garden, I would let it be there.

I don't suppose 'to surface' is used too often. It mostly is used if someone is a bit late getting out of bed perhaps.
