Self-reliance

Synonymous with self-reliance is independence and self-sustaining. It is defined as making one's own way, working to support oneself, not depending on others for provision. The concept of self-reliance seems to be a thing of the past. We live in an era of entitlement mentality. People act as if society and the wealthy owe them something. They live for government subsidies and handouts. The Blaze contributor, Steven Crowder stated, " Liberals don't believe in the ultimate concept of self-reliance, which is why they look to the government for stability." The problem with depending on others to provide for us is that we become sub-servient to that person or entity. We give up a little freedom with each handout. I still love the idea of self-reliance. It is one of the many concepts upon which America was founded. It, not only, allows one to provide for themself, it gives a sense of pride and self-confidence. Self-reliance is also Biblical. Proverbs 6:6 reads, "Go to the ant, you sluggard. Consider her ways and be wise." II Thessalonians 3:10 says that if a man doesn't work, then he should not eat. I Timothy 5:8 states that if anyone does not provide for those in his household, then he is worse than an infidel. My husband and I have always been self-sufficient, but with the government becoming more tyrannical each day, we are taking it to a different level. We are learning a lot. We have , for a few years, had a small garden and chickens. We are trying to expand on this. Plus, now we are trying to get away from doctors as much as possible. It is hard work, but we are enjoying this journey. What are some other areas in which one can become self-sustaining? photo credit: webstockreview

I am self sufficient. I can provide for myself. But being self sustainable , i think i cannot do that . Because when we say self sustaining , that means we do not rely on others the whole time that we live. I believe that we still need other people especially our family to help us sustain our life.

I guess it depends on how you look at the word. I guess I was using more of a connotative definition rather than a denotative for self-sustaining. In actuality, no one is self-sustaining. We need God to sustain us. But I was thinking of that word in terms of always looking for ways to provide for self whether it be through gardening, work, barter system, etc. I was thinking of avoiding government as a source at all costs.

we are moving in that direction again too. Our chickens just started laying, we have a few ducks. I want more of both those. We always have a large garden. I do need to get better with herbs, not great at growing those. We are tossing around the idea, of meat rabbits and maybe lambs. I thought about geese but heard they are a real problem animal, we have had goats in the past and they were a pain. I just want easy at this point.
