We saved a small life today

We have two dogs to take care of here. There is a sheep-dog, a kelpie, which has a good-sized pen but he is let out each day for a run. He can’t be left unsupervised because, when he thinks you’re not looking, he takes off for parts unknown. We let him run freely but put him back on the lead before we get too close to home. The other dog is, I think, a labradoodle,Lulu, but the owners think it might be inbred as it has a few behavioural issues. It can’t be let off the lead at all but it has a big backyard to roam in. We’ve been throwing a tennis ball for it and we’re now best of friends. This afternoon Vince noticed it sniffing around and next moment it has a sleepy lizard/bobtailed goanna in its mouth. It took us a while to make Lulu drop the goanna and we were then able to relocate it well away from the yard. I just hope it doesn’t return. Rarely a dull moment when you’re house-sitting. The photo is mine of Lulu.

Could Lulu be more of a handful then all of the animals that you cared for at your last house sit? She looks adorable, labradoodles are cute dogs, but they can be really high strung that I know of.

She likes us both now but we're not to let her off the lead outside. She takes off after a scent then won't pay any attention to you. But it's okay. At least, she is friendly to us now. Highly strung would be a good word for it.

@JudyEv I think that high strung comes with the poodle genes, Ellie had a bit of that until she was able to listen to commands at about 18 months before she really settled down, and that was after some pupply classes.

@Juliaacv The only command the kelpie knows is 'stop' but at least it is something. lol

She is cute. Both of those breeds were originally hunting breeds. She could just have a lot of the instincts from that.

@JudyEv A good hunting dog seems to lose its hearing when on a trail also

@wolfgirl569 That's what we were told. If you let her run free and she gets on a trail, she won't listen at all.

They are curious little dogs that think they can hurt those that are smaller than them. I think you cannot prevent that from growing dogs or from dogs with hunting instincts.

@JudyEv Sometimes they do not intend to hurt them but in the process of struggling to flee from them they are hurt by them.

@rsa101 Yes, that's true and some of the retriever breeds are bred to pick things up carefully and gently without hurting them. But Lulu was flinging this one back and forth. I think she was pretty intent on hurting it if she could.

That's true. It's instinctive to chase and grab smaller creatures.

@JudyEv Hard to tell which end is which, it looks like it's going in both directions. The lumpy bit is the head?

Just another name for a lizard I guess. This is the sort she caught.

@BarBaraPrz It is hard to tell in this photo but yes, the head is on the left. It's also called a blue-tongue lizard/goanna.

BAD Lulu, I often save lizards before my cat or the one of my neighbors arrive to catch them. You should see their look when I do this.

@JudyEv cats wonder why we interfere with the hunting and we do not appreciate their little gifts. Surely dogs cannot understand why we do not want that they drink toilet water and roll into smelly things.

They must really wonder what humans are all about sometimes. And dogs must wonder why we don't like them rolling in smelly things.

@LadyDuck We've just got back from walking Russell. Next time we are going to count how many times he lifts his leg while we're out. It must have been at least 20!!

@LindaOHio We don't go so far with the other one. We don't have to walk her at all unless we want to. But kelpies are really happiest if they're out and about.

We've just a 2.6 km walk with the kelpie. We'll have a little rest before we take the other one.

I have no clue what a goanna looks like. I'm glad you saved it. I thought you would say that the Kelpie was giving you grief. I still think Rufus over here looks like a Kelpie and God help us, acts like one.

I still need to get a good photo of Russell. Here is the goanna. We always called them 'sleepy lirards' but that probably sounds a bit strange if you've never heard of it. They are mostly slow-moving.

@JudyEv It sounds like your work is cut out for you in dealing with the two dogs. I had a lab-husky and would take her out on her leash all the time and then one day I wanted to trust her and instead of her going up to the apartment she went back down and out of the building and was gone for two hours. I believe she did not realize she was coming home because she followed a lady with a dog and it turns out the lady and the dog came to visit a neighbor of mine. The neighbor brought her home to me and my dog was confused and not happy to be back home again. When I walked her after that I would never take the leash off of her. I learned my lesson well.

The lizard thanks you. Nico was sniffing around a box in the kitchen. I was praying there wasnt a mouse in there. I have never had one in the house and I don't want to start now!! He never plucked anything out of it. Hopefully, it was his imagination!
