I'm thinking of driving up to Kansas

I was emailing a friend and she was saying she was a wuss about driving, so I told her I like to drive. I went on to explain this story. Every summer when Mom had her condo in Durango Colorado, I would fly up. This year we had planned to take a road trip. My sister was living in Washington state at the point. We drove up to Yellowstone, and spent a night. When we left by the north entrance we then spent a night in Butte Montana. The next day we drove across the Idaho panhandle and halfway across Washington to get to my sister's. We took a trip over to Victoria B.C. with my sister and her partner. We spent one night at there, then a night before catching the ferry to Victoria, a night in Victoria, another night after coming back on the ferry at the same hotel - in fact, the hotel had a deal where they'd keep some of our stuff. Finally a couple of nights at my sister's again before heading back to the condo. We had spent a night south of Salt Lake City. Now, Mom had gotten a call at Patty's that her condo had sold. When we got back to the condo, we packed up the car. The buyer wanted one of the beds, Mom had a kind of sale of everything else, except the bed, so she had a place to sleep and a neighbor/friend loaned some folding chairs so we had a place to sit. (Those things reeked of smoke.) Oh, and the guy who bought the beds couldn't get them that day. On the day we had planned to drive home, Mom had to stay a few more days to sign documents, but I needed to get back to work, so I drove myself home, even spending a night in New Mexico. Now, normally I don't spook too easily, but I was kind of creeped out that night. So I watched some Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, for whatever reason, that made me feel safe. I was fine driving alone then, I don't really see a problem driving alone now, even if it is almost 25 years later. Do you like to drive? Do you feel safe driving alone? The only thing I worry about is breaking down on the highway.

I do not even drive, I know how to drive, but I never want to go to the driving school and pass the exams to get a driver license. My husband likes to drive. He drove 4,000 miles in 2 weeks years ago while visiting the United States.

That's somewhat less than 300 miles a day or 6 hours. My roommate's sister works for the contractor who has the Post Office's truck contract. She drives about that 5 days a week and still sleeps at home every night. I might liked a job like that once upon a time, now not so much.

@ElicBxn We did not drive long distances every day, as we stopped in some places for 3 to 5 days to visit and we did not drive a lot when we stayed in a place. He made an average of 700 miles per day on that trip. Our longest non stop anyway was in Europe From London to Monte Carlo.

@LadyDuck I tend to consider a 100 mile trip 2 hours, so, since Wichita is 550 miles, maybe a little less since I live on the north side of Austin, I think it'll be 10-11 hours. The maps say about 8+ hours, however, since I will need to gas up at least once and probably have a potty break in there, is why I give myself more time.

Driving alone is the best option when feeling down.

Thanks for that observation. I agree, even though I hadn't thought of it, it does always seem to make me more content.

@sickly09 I drive just over an hour several times a year to visit a friend out of town. This trip, however, will take more like 10 hours.

Neither Connie nor Viv, my wife, could drive. Connie had never learned, even though she did drive a few times when she was hitchhiking before I met her. Viv couldn't see well enough to drive, I mean, there is a law against blind people driving for a reason... So, even on trips where I was with either of them, I was the only driver.

I like to drive, but living so far away from alot of things makes it a bit of a chore sometimes. I am comfortable driving alone, but if it was a really long distance, it might worry me a bit. I have driven 500 miles by myself a time or two though.

Durango Colorado is just over 900 miles, I did that in two days. Wichita Kansas is about 550 miles and while the map says about 8 hours and 20 minutes, it doesn't need gas or to pee... or even eat. I still think I could do it in a day.

@ElicBxn Oh you can do it in a day, but it is a long tiring day. We will be driving up to PA and back in a day..it is easier to do it in two though.

I used to drive alone with no worries but not these days. I would be afraid of many things I see in the news. Road rage. Crazy drivers. The list goes on. Sad the world has become so evil. And I don’t consider myself a wuss. Just trying to stay safe.

I agree, and if I couldn't drive on the interstate the whole way, I might be more worried. I got to thinking too, on my way back contacting Connie's cousin, who lives around Waco, and drop off a few of the things she asked about and I've never had a chance to get them to her.

@CarolDM life is dangerous, you live until you die, honestly, since I've totaled two cars, one on the interstate, I've figured that I can't live hiding in my house. They want me, they have to come and get me. I know of a case where a teen was shot in her parents' house just because someone was aiming at someone on the street for a drive-by and missed their target.

@ElicBxn Interstates are dangerous to these days. But we do what we have to do.
