Ember night.

The night is long and only half way through so I put on clothes and sit in the dark beside the fire and watch the twinkle of dying orange embers among grey ash. The echo of chords played on the piano in the early evening linger on in the turf-scented stillness; a merry tune takes a melancholy turn, and spent laughter falls from the folds of heavy-braided curtains where it became trapped after escaping from wine-blushed lips after dinner. All this when I poked at the embers, blowing too hard on them to fan them back into life, leaving me dizzy, but not blowing hard enough.

You are lucky to have a fireplace where you can have the fire safely. The last time I sat in front of a fireplace was in 1974 when I went with my family to a Dude Ranch near Santa Barbara. We stayed there for a week in December.

So beautifully written. I know how hard you have to blow to get back embers to life. Most of the time I get ashes in my eyes.

Very evocative! Haven't lit the fire yet here, waiting until October at least!

Wow! So poetic. We don't have fireplaces here. The weather is not favourable for fireplace. I love houses with fireplace. Enjoy sitting around it
