My coworker was shocked that I have someone come clean for me

She knew that I had someone clean the house back in the day and she said that she wanted to get someone to help her out. I think she had one woman once and that was the end of that because the woman didn't do things the way she wanted them done. Today I mentioned that I had to stop at the ATM to get cash for the cleaning lady and she was like "but you live in an apartment!" I was like "yup and I do not enjoy cleaning. I choose to spend my time cooking or doing other things." She was incredulous that I pay someone to clean a 2 bedroom apartment. I don't know what to tell her. I mean I do the dishes each day, I do laundry regularly, I wipe counters, etc. I also recognize the importance of regular cleaning. I just don't want to do it and at this point in my life I can afford to pay someone else to do it. I don't have the interest in or patience to get down on my hands and knees and scrub a tub. I've known her for 19 years now. I know how her mind works. I would bet a lot of money that she will be looking for a cleaning lady of her own tonight.

If you can have someone come and clean, why not?

If you can afford it why not and also it gives the person some needed cash.

I think you don't have to explain or justify yourself if you have a cleaning lady. It's your life and your money.

You do what makes you happy. I talked my hubby into buying an old 2 story house. We hired a young woman to clean it- I don't have the oomph to dust and polish a wooden staircase let alone vacuum the upstairs rugs. The woman is delighted to have money going into her pocketbook.

I think it would be wonderful to have one, I'm glad you can. Wish we all could.

When I first went to live in the US I was taken aback at the number of people who employed cleaners and even cooks! I thought America was supposed to be this classless egalitarian society and had rebelled against the idea of having staff, like the grand old British houses. But guess what? Like many ideas, that idea has now come back here and twenty years later, many people employ a cleaner and often a gardener too. Not to mention a nanny, dog-walker, shirt-ironer and goodness knows what else. We'll see if this continues with the current 'cost of living crisis'.

My only response is, "Why not?" You can afford it, you hate to clean...what's the problem?
