Another milestone for Keke today.

As you know, Keke is a 2 1/2-year-old autistic child at the preschool where I work as a teacher and child psychologist. At a certain point, I noticed that he can name printed numbers up to ten, and it now turns out that he can identify several letters as well. His milestone today was a simple one: Essentially he learned how to help clean up. He likes to throw things, but it's often either hard (potentially hurtful) or "over his shoulder" (no idea where that behavior came from). Today, as we were playing with small wooden disks with emotion faces on them, I started tossing the disks back into the basket, saying "I did it!" or "ta da!" every time I got one in. He started imitating me, and together we cleaned up the emotion disks. It's a small step, but it's in the right direction. I like making "clean up" a game, whether the kids I'm working with are autistic or not.

He’s a clever child to name printed numbers at 2 1/2 years old. Unusual I would think.

@RubyHawk Some autistic kids have odd areas of ability or expertise. Keke also loves music, and makes deep eye contact with me when I sing to him.

@TheHorse Very few kids that age would have any knowledge of numbers

Following your progress with Keke. Even adults would rather play than work, especially the cleaning up part.

That makes sense to me. Of course he wants to do what you do, he likes you and knows that you like him

That is a great step, imitation is the way to make him do things that he never did before.

You and Keke make a good team. Put a basketball hoop on the toy box.

We have one outside. I believe he has "gotten it" and put a small ball through it.

If you can make a game of it, it's easier to get kids to help/cooperate.
