A Little Road Trip

Not much of a road trip, just a drive down to Radcliff (which is the town outside of the Fort Knox Army post). I guess Lou Avul is tired of me being in her part of town, so I stayed on my own side!
The drive down Dixie Highway was incredible. At one point you come across the small town of West Point, which is at the confluence of the Salt and Ohio Rivers. I’ve discussed the “tourist destinations” there before: things that would appeal to history buffs and very few others, like a Lewis & Clark tour and Civil War sites (see my older post about Fort Duffield).
I stopped at the Veterans Park, which is right on the Ohio River, for the bottom picture. I watched a barge make a U-turn while admiring the beauty of the trees on the other side of the river.
On down to Radcliff, where I got some cheap gas (as in, 60c a gallon cheaper) and stopped for a walk at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery. The top two photos were taken there, including the one showing the somber beauty of the markers amid the autumn foliage.
I saw a VFW honor guard van come in, so I didn’t stay long, knowing there’d be a funeral procession showing up soon.
The drive down and back didn’t take that long, and it was stunning the entire way thanks to the tree-covered hills surrounding the road the entire trip.

There was a threat of rain but I think everybody else got it except us.

I’m enjoying every second of it, believe me. I looked at the Mount Washington Train webcam and the leaves are disappearing quickly in New Hampshire. That means we’re three weeks or so behind.

@JudyEv — there was a cartoon called The Family Circus in our funny papers. One of them had one of the kids saying, “Today’s a gift, that’s why it’s called the present.”

@FourWalls Such beautiful sights don't always last for a long time. More's the pity.

Oh, yeah, I’ve known Lou for years. She’ll deny it, though.
We have a very famous cemetery here, Cave Hill, where Ali and Colonel Sanders and other noteworthy people are buried. It’s beautiful to walk through.

Those pictures look like they could be right here in Idaho. I haven't been out for a drive in so long. I miss it. My ex and I used to do an evening drive quite often.

I got as close as Montana when I went out west last year, but I didn’t make it to Idaho. I know the west was gorgeous while I was there (late September/early October).

@porwest — it can wait until next year. They’re already talking S word in northern Michigan, so I’m only going south for the next few months.

There are a couple of live cams in New England, Vermont and New Hampshire, and their leaves are starting to disappear. I guess ours will be gone in another three to four weeks.

Yes, we’re relative neighbors. I eat at a restaurant in her neck of the woods three days a week, and she comes over to my side of town to see her mother-in-law.

In college we had an assignment in Art Appreciation class: “go somewhere there’s art and write about it.” I went to a cemetery.

I imagine that the teacher considered it was a weird place to write about. There are some beautiful cemetery, the small one not far from our home is pretty and neat.

I don’t hate driving yet. But if people get any crazier in their driving my next car is going to be a tank.

The rain missed us. It was on either side of Louisville, but the weather radio said we got a “trace.” Just east of us there were severe thunderstorms.
