Shopping centre decorations

Many shopping centres and even streets nowadays seem to have adopted decorations. Is this a new thing or did I just not notice before?
I mean of course I noticed that they used to decorate for Christmas, but now they often have decorations all year around. I guess it gives the place something of a festive air, but I’m not sure if it encourages people to shop more... or perhaps it does?
Maybe the cheery atmosphere subconsciously influences people to visit one particular place rather than another?
Either way I’m sure there are some interior designers somewhere rubbing their hands in glee, because this kind of thing can’t come cheap!

They've been doing it for ages. The fact that you haven't noticed just shows how well it fits in.
