Do ladies have bigger bottoms than men?

I watched a YouTube video of sheep-dipping and Battlesden carts. It is one of a series of videos featuring Jack Hargreaves, an English TV presenter and writer. I could go on and on about the programs but won’t. However, I want to tell you about an interesting feature of the Battlesden carts. They were made in Bedfordshire during the late 19th century. There was a ladies’ and a gents’ version. The gents’ cart had larger wheels which meant the step was higher off the ground. The smaller wheels on the ladies’ carts meant they didn’t have to step up so far to get into the cart. The wheels had splashguards which curved way down over the wheels in a bid to keep dirt and mud from splashing up on the passengers’ clothes. But the intriguing bit is that the seat on the ladies’ carts was four inches longer than that of the men’s. I’m sure it was just to accommodate their bustles, not because they had bigger bottoms. The photo is mine of Prudence, a pony we once owned.

In the 19th century ladies wore dresses that take a lot more place than those men wore, so it's not a matter of bottom, but clothes. Surely my brother has a much bigger bottom than I have.

@JudyEv I often wonder how the women could walk wearing those big dresses. When I watch some old western film I pity those women.

I'm sure you're right. The big dresses must have been very inconvenient sometimes.

@sallypup You're always welcome to any smiles or laughs I can help you with. Public office wouldn't fit my personality. I'm told my face gives away my thoughts whether I say what I'm thinking or not.

As far as I know, ladies have wider pelvic area than men, to put it in a decent way. I can't elaborate further on this as it might sound unacceptable on a site such as this.

Oh Prudence you are so very handsome. Fascinating about those carts. That donkey cart that I rode in did not feel very big at all. I am NOT tiny and wow it felt like it would be easy to fly out of the thing. I love your photo.

Nice photo, although I'm guessing that isn't a Battlesden cart (not that I know too much about the dozens of types of horse-drawn vehicles that used to throng the streets!) But yes, in general ladies have bigger skirts and bigger bottoms, at least in proportion to their size though maybe not in absolute terms!

I can go with that as a logical explanation. lol. Let me just state for the record that while I do not find that women's bottoms are necessarily bigger, they are certainly better to look at than the bottoms of men.

Oh that’s neat I bet you are right about it being due to their dresses. Don’t you just love those old dresses they wore. So elegant yet I bet so very uncomfortable.

Oh the things women had to wear back in the day, I can't imagine even trying to wear some of those things ..... even without a bustle the dresses with all the petticoats under them would make them broader in the bottom than men.

Yes, I agree. I can't imagine wearing all that junk that they had to wear. I've noticed that historians have never shown what the poor wore, I'll bet their clothing wasn't nearly as complicated.

Didn’t women wear those big-butt flowing dresses with the hoop skirts underneath back then? They probably only weighed 90 pounds without their dress but 200 pounds WITH it.

@JudyEv — I have read that a number of drowning victims in 19th and 20th century ship disasters were women who were weighted down by their dresses.

@JudyEv I wonder where the word "broads" came from. Is that an American term? It's from before my time but I've seen it in old (American) movies.

I am thinking it had more to do with the dresses they wore. So many layers, but not sure if bustles were part of the fashion then

I'm sure you're right - about it being more to do with the clothing. When ladies were wearing bustles, they were probably considered too incompetent to drive!!

Oh yes, the ladies clothes most definitely. I really feel bad about what women in centuries past had to endure where clothes were concerned - all those voluminous skirts and petticoats, especially in hot weather. Men always had it easier.
