Back to the old ways

Many things that became ‘old-fashioned’ over the last few decades are making something of a comeback. Vinyl records, for example, are enjoying a resurgence, as are cassette tapes. When I was growing up my Dad had a steering lock for his car, but a few decades ago these went out of fashion when cars allegedly became more secure with fancy electronic security features. But guess what? Modern security features are not secure at all and there are various simple ways that they can be hacked. The fancier the ‘security’ (remote keyless entry etc.) the easier it is to hack, it seems. So back to the tried-and-tested old ways we go. You can’t circumvent a steering wheel lock with a pocket-held relay. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2022.

This is so, so true. So many so-called 'improvements' are pretty useless really. And devices that are supposed to save time? There's another misnomer for you.

@Fleura @LadyDuck Oh my goodness. That is indeed scary. I had no idea it could be so easy to duplicate keys.

Both of our vehicles have a tracking device on them that if stolen, the police can immediately track when you give them the VIN. I have no worries and feel secure knowing that.

@Fleura I remember back in the '70's my Dad had our new car in for servicing and he received a phone call from the dealership that his new car had been stolen. It was he who found it. It was a year that we were without it, we had to drive another new car from the dealership while his was repaired. He would not allow them to write it off as his insurance would have gone sky high. But that was many decades ago, and if we had a vehicle stolen, my hubs and I would replace it. I do not think that I could drive something that someone else had laid their hands on. But I also think that some of these visible devices such as in the photo attract attention, and in many times, from the wrong kind of people.

That's great, but I would much rather simply not have my car stolen in the first place. The worry and inconvenience of losing it, plus the fact that yes you may be able to find it but it could be damaged and repair costs are huge! On top of that there have been plenty of news stories of people who tracked down their stolen vehicles only to have the police say they are too busy to help or it's a civil matter or some other pathetic excuse

We still use the grinding stone even though we have a blender. We got rid of our electric grinder as the stuff would heat up and so would the stuff in the blender.

Some things like that have had a resurgence. When I was a child a pestle and mortar was considered something from ancient times. My Mum used a mortar as a birdbath (although I didn't realise that was what it was until quite recently!) Nowadays I use one quite frequently.

I ride the bus, sold my car way back 1998. Sold it gave away my vinyl & record players. Read replies, gee, that easy to steal or break in.

Whatever keeps you safe is important. We have the tracking devices here if the car is stolen.

That's useful, but I'd much rather not have it stolen in the first place! You might know where it is, but not be able to just go there and get it back, or it might be damaged.

Cassette tapes are? Wow I had no idea! I did know about records. My nephew, my son and daughter all have record players. Gosh crazy how so many things can be hacked. Well the old ways are better sometimes.

With a cassette you can record things you want and combine them, record speech etc, yet with all the fancy things available nowadays there doesn't seem to be a modern equivalent. Yes even easier than I realised - see the comments by @LadyDuck!

There have been multiple reports of Kia and Hyundai cars being stolen in the U.S. as the result of a “TikTok challenge” that shows how to steal the car with a USB cable. Kia/Hyundai doesn’t seem that interested in jumping in to fix the problem of their automobiles being that easily stolen. So back to the steering wheel locks!

@fleura My wife uses a crook lock all the time and her car is worth less than the device. I keep telling her that no-one will want to steal her 22 year old rust bucket but she doesn’t believe me.

She's right I think. I have known the most ridiculously worthless vehicles to be stolen. And it's worth the few seconds taken to fit the lock to avoid the hours of stress caused by the loss of a vehicle!

I haven't seen one of those steering wheel locks in ages but it makes sense. These days you can't be too careful

The crooks are no less clever than the people who think these things up. It is easier to circumvent a system then design one from scratch, I think
