A promised update

While at the Bob Dole VA I accomplished something Bob says he has not been able to accomplish. I got people to talk to me. In their defense, Bob was likely sleeping, or having a hard time understanding them without his hearing aids and with everyone still wearing masks, and face shields at times. First I talked to the nurse on duty. She was patient and understanding and understood about not having hearing aids because she wears them herself. I made sure she knew that Bob is perfectly capable of making decisions for himself. She made note of that. I also told her that no one had been communicating any updates to me. Also noted. That may be why his internal medicine doctor showed up and we had a visit. I bet the nurse called her. It is a good thing I took him some clothes. If things go as expected he will be discharged to a skilled nursing facility (nursing home) as early as Monday. He was taken to Bob Dole VA in a hospital gown and socks. Monday morning he will get his last does of IV antibiotics. That is why he can be transferred. Parkside Home, where he is going, will be able to provide care and rehab for him, to get his strength back. It is much closer to our home and I likely will see him every day. Right now he is on a full liquid diet, as opposed to clear liquids last week. He gets soups like tomato and mushroom, and juice, jello, yogurt, coffee and milk. He will not drink the milk they have as it is not a brand he is used to. He says it tastes funny. Coffee is too acid for his stomach. He also gets an nutritional drink, Ensure, twice daily. Here is where I admit to a failing on my part. I forgot to put service time on my phone the 20th. The 21st the social worker tried to contact me and could not get me. I am sure I will hear from them on Monday. Bob is having reduced symptoms, but still has them. It is a long way back. C Diff is hard to treat. Often people die in the aftermath because of not eating and weight loss, etc. So now starts a new chapter of healing.

We had covid the last week of August. When Bob became sick with C Diff he was also still testing positive for covid, but he had no fever, no symptoms. Because of this the VA hospital would not allow him to have visitors.

@GardenGerty Seems no Covid in our place. No more sensationalization of Covid news. We are now enjoying the new normal life.

@GardenGerty It might take some time for him to fully recover. I hope it's sooner than later.

I'm still wondering about the term "skilled nursing facility". Are there any UNskilled nursing facilities out there, and if so, what good would they be?

From the internet:" What is defined as skilled nursing care? Skilled nursing care is provided by trained registered nurses in a medical setting under a doctor's supervision. It's basically the same level of nursing care you get in the hospital. Patients may go from the hospital to a skilled nursing facility to continue recovering after an illness, injury or surgery". Otherwise it is a long term care facility or assisted living. Skilled nursing offers rehab services.

I pray Bob will soon be on a solid food diet, I personally can't imagine a fluid only diet.

It can get boring pretty quickly. As of now he is eating pretty much anything he wants to.I had held back spicey for a while, but the salsa is back on the table.

So glad your husband, doing better! He'll be nearer, and hoping with his hearing aid. Well, with all the worry, it's no wonder you forgot about your phone.

@GardenGerty Good! Yes, for people who can't hear good, it's essentially important to have them. My dear Mom, towards the end, her ear ringing became bad...she lands in hospital, nurses were looking at her inquiringly, I explained she is hard of hearing. They relax and talk louder and use hand gestures. My dear Mom, she wasn't the explaining type to save her life.I miss her.

You really did well with bringing the current situation to light with the head nurse, that should open the lilnes of communication and hopefully that will carry over to the communication that your hub's receives.

Nope, the communication was still bad. I like the VA clinics and outpatient services, but this hospitalization was bad.

We notice it immediately if we change from our usual milk to the long-life stuff. I hope he is moved from the hospital as planned. It will be one step forward.

Thanks for the update, sending prayers and good thoughts your way, that he will indeed improve in the nursing home and can return home. It is good you will be able to see him every day and communicate with the staff.

This is so hard on him, and on you. I’m glad he’s getting to a rehab facility that’s close by so you don’t have to drive halfway across Kansas to it.

I'm glad you were finally able to find out what was going on with Bob... I'm sure he's ready to be anywhere else as long as it isn't a hospital. I hope he's doing fine and back home very soon.
