Not quite as altruistic as it looks!

Autumn is here and the leaves are falling everywhere. The little road we live on has a lot of overhanging trees so of course that means lots of leaves on the ground. Passing cars soon squash them into mush and that means a lot of mud at the sides of the road for us to walk in on the way to and from school as the road is narrow and there’s no pavement (sidewalk). It also blocks the drains so when it’s wet there are big pools of water on the road. So I’ve been going out collecting the leaves by the barrow-load when they are still dry and freshly-fallen. This significantly reduces the mud problem and no doubt my neighbours think I’m being extremely altruistic tidying the place up like this! But I have an ulterior motive – I am the compost queen and I’m always filling up my compost bins with anything suitable I can get my hands on. All fruit and vegetable matter from our kitchen of course, grass clippings from our own garden and our neighbour’s, ripped up cardboard, horse manure when I have time to go to some nearby stables to get it, shredded branches from trimming shrubs and hedges, and now fallen leaves. I have nine compost bins and over winter I just heap the stuff up on the veg patch as well. Next year it will all be recycled into flowers and tasty fruit and vegetables for us all All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2022.

@fleura Composting is so deeply satisfying. It makes me feel quite righteous.

And you can think about all those worms hard at work on your behalf while you put your feet up by the fire : )

Wow! Nine bins. Yup, you're the compost queen all right. (I just have the one open pit.)

It certainly helps with moisture retention, feeding, suppressing weeds and all sorts.

Even though you kill two birds with one stone by doing it,there is no denying that your action decreases the hidden danger of the road.

We have several compost pits that get filled up with garden and kitchen waste. In a year the compost gets ready for use.

My dad used to compost all the leaves and stuff he could get his hands on. We compost what we can but I'm not that ambitious.

It is smart of you to remove the leaves, both for safety sake, drainage as well as for composting.

I used to mulch my plants and shrubbery with fallen leaves and put it in my compost piles. I never wasted leaves. Now that I live in an apartment I don't have leaves to worry about.

Leaves are falling here as well. And they are being used for milch around the trees and plants.
