Grandpa will finally get a headstone

My paternal grandpa's grave has been without a headstone since he passed away in February of 2016. I never understood why my father never did it. First it seemed like he couldn't find a picture to put on it. But then I don't know. Regardless of the reason, it was not a good thing to do. It's not like he couldn't afford it.
Now that my dad is gone and we are doing a headstone for him we have decided to do a headstone for my grandpa as well. It is the right thing to do and long overdue.
Have to start looking for a suitable picture for both headstones. From what I have heard Jews are not really supposed to put pictures on headstones but today people do that. There are cemeteries though that don't allow that. Ours does, so I want to have a picture on both of them.

I noticed that people from the former Soviet Union—Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, etc.—seem to all have photos on their headstones where I live. If cemetery allows that of course.

@lovebuglena Those of Anglo-Saxon lineage don't seem to bother nearly as much.

It sure will. It will no longer bother me or my mom.

It will. Have to find good photos to use. I hope we have some that will work. Will have to search for them at my mom’s house.

That’s nice you are doing that, and I think the right thing to do.
I have always enjoyed walking through cemeteries and reading headstones. It’s like studying history, but on a more personal, local level. But it saddens me when you walk by gravesites that have no headstones.

@lovebuglena I’ve never seen photos on a headstone before. Is that a common thing in Jewish cemeteries?

Not all Jewish cemeteries allow photos on headstones.

@moffittjc I’ve seen many headstones where a person’s photo is on the headstone. But mainly it’s from people that are from the former Soviet Union.

It was bothering me for years that grandpa didn't have one all this time. I wish I knew why my dad didn't want to do it.

@lovebuglena I am sure you are right, may be the cemetery where my father in law is buried is very strict about the rules.

Maybe depends on how conservative the cemetery is. If that’s the correct word to use. People from the former Soviet Union have pictures on their headstones usually.
