Some things are just not worth the effort.

My friend, who was poorly a while ago, received all kinds of gifts and treats from friends in an effort to keep her spirits up. Among these was a goodly supply of chocolate, but there was just more of it than she cared to eat so she passed some of it on to me, including some bars of vegan chocolate (she was vegetarian).
Yesterday evening I felt like ‘a little something’ (as Winnie the Pooh would say) so I looked in the cupboard and decided I would try one of these bars.
This one is supposed to be strawberry flavour 'milk chocolate alternative’ (whatever that means).
I’m glad I’m not vegan because as far as I was concerned, it just wasn’t worth the effort of eating it! After a couple of squares I was rescued by my partner who thought it was edible.
Have you tried vegan chocolate and did you like it?

How interesting and nope I would literally starve if I tried to be a vegan. I have trouble keeping weight up with being a bad meat eater. Although, getting older is helping. That wait till you 40 something is not totally wrong.

A few weeks ago we tried making a vegan and gluten-free chocolate cake (just to see if it worked!) I had used a recipe for brownies from the same source and that was surprisingly OK. However the cake was far too dry and like chocolate sawdust.
You're probably wondering why I bothered since I can eat anything! I do have one or two friends who are gluten intolerant and a few who are vegetarian and I sometimes contribute dishes to group events so it's good to have a few options in case they are requested!

@Fleura When we were having the concerts we found a lot of the musicians were vegetarian and some had various intolerances too. We found ourselves having a few special recipes up our sleeves in case we needed them. What was annoying was that we'd ask them to let us know of any dietary requirements as we were five miles from a shop. Sometimes they did but half the time they didn't bother. But it's all in the past now.

I find that it very much depends on the ingredients in the recipe. For example, oat milk chocolate isn't bad, but I'm not a fan of rice milk chocolate. I wonder what this one used?

@spiderdust Thanks! Yes I guess you are right, although if it was me I think I would just do without!

@Fleura I looked it up and it uses rice cream. For people who cannot have dairy at all, it's probably heaven sent, but I don't enjoy it myself.

No, haven't tried vegan chocolate. I always have 95% dark chocolate.

@Beestring OK, but it's certainly much easier to get vegan dark chocolate. And it's nice!

I have a lot of friends who would appreciate this sort of treat as they are vegan. I would "try" a bite, but eating the rest of it would definitely depend on taste. I've had some strange tasting vegan products - hard to believe there are folks who like some of this stuff.

@Fleura Pretend foods
- that's just what it is! I still don't understand why vegans would want to eat fake meat that tastes like meat . . . something about that doesn't sound right. Yah, we've had some meat substitutes - serious yuck. My vegan friend has found some vegan sausages - that was not too bad - but that was a rare find.

@much2say I guess some people think they ought to eat vegan food as it's better for them, less environmentally damaging or whatever, but really they like meat and want to recreate that flavour and texture. I'm not convinced by the arguments though. I mean yes no doubt eating beans instead of beef from some huge intensive factory cattle farm would probably be a better choice, in terms of both health and the environment, but when it comes to eating fake meat made with all sorts of highly-processed ingredients shipped from all over the world, that doesn't seem to make sense and just eating less meat raised locally in a non-intensive way would be better. After all we can't all grow soy beans and coconuts, some land is only suitable for sheep!

Yes me too. Really dark chocolate is generally vegan anyway, so that is OK, it was whatever they used as a milk substitute in this that made it odd.
On the whole I'm not in favour of 'pretend' foods. I'm fine eating vegetables, but some 'vegan steaks' we bought once (they were reduced so partner thought we would try them) have gone down in family lore as the benchmark for something really horrible!

I am a vegetarian but not a vegan.
I agree some supposed imitations turn out insipid.
Then again, I recall waiting for a mock chicken, vegetarian, but it became an inordinate wait. The reason was our food went to one who had ordered the real stuff but was blissfully unaware of it.

I am not a vegan or vegetarian and love meat too much and gave up chocolate candy a long time ago. I still eat chocolate things but not candy bars. So, that means I have never tried it so do not know what it tastes like. I will take your word for it.

Not yet, skeptical about it's taste. Thanks for the heads up!

I have tried it. It was just plain chocolate, but it was not good. I would rather have just one bite of real than an entire bar of the vegan stuff.

I know I am somewhat old school, some things are already wonderful and there is no need to improve on them!

Never tried vegan chocolate. Wonder how a chocolate tastes without milk in it.

I would not have tried it, or maybe I would if it was given to me, but strawberry flavored things are not usually for me. No way is fruit a chocolate alternative. It should just be a fruity treat.

I have never tried a vegan chocolate. Does it taste weird or different from
Normal milk chocolates? I really love chocolates but I will choose a better quality chocolate to cheap ones because they add hell lot of oil in the cheaper versions and I catch a cough immediately. I would really love to try vegan chocolate though
