A fun afternoon with friends

On Tuesday, two ladies I used to work with came for lunch and on Wednesday, three other friends came for lunch and we then played canasta, a card game. Vince cooked salmon on Tuesday and a sweet and sour casserole on Wednesday. I made golden syrup muffins for dessert Tuesday along with a golden syrup sauce. There was enough sauce left over so I made more muffins for Wednesday. The muffin sat in custard with the sauce poured over and crushed walnuts sprinkled on top. We were served this a few months ago. The muffins and sauce had been frozen which I thought was a very good idea. I might do the same myself as it would be a good standby for unexpected visitors. Vince took the photo as we were about to start our game. Canasta is played with a partner and it was nice that each pair won a game.

@kobesbuddy I love euchre! We played euchre and a game called Rickety Kate with Vince's brother when he spent a night here last week.

It's an interesting game but there are a number of versions with slightly different rules.

They would be good to freeze so you could just pull a couple out if you feel like dessert.

I wouldn't mind trying my hand at canasta sometime. I have not played a lot of cards in my day though.

This version is a bit simplified perhaps but it's good fun and doesn't drag on as long as some canasta versions do.

@allknowing We didn't do this during covid. They say there is a new covid variant on its way.

I used to love playing canasta but that was when I still lived at home with my folks. No one I know likes to play cards or else they don't know how.

That sounds like fun. I used to love to play Pinochle but that is one game not many people I've met knew anything about.

I play cards on a Thursday too at the clubhouse. That's called Chinese rummy. It's quite a good game too.

My mother used to get together with some of the other farmer's wives in the area once a week to play canasta. I do not think that I have ever heard of your working days, what did you do?

I taught piano privately for years then did secretarial course at a technical college and had a variety of clerical positions. I spent most of that time helping run courses for carers of people with Alzheimers'.

@changjiangzhibin89 Thank you. The cyclamen that I took house-sitting is on the bench behind. It has just about finished flowering now. The flowers you can see are marigolds. I love their yellow colour.

We played in pair and each pair won a game so that was a good outcome. We didn't have time for a decider.

@JudyEv I wouldn't want to play bridge either. I've never tried but I imagine it might be the cause of marital discord if you played with your spouse!

@Fleura Vin and I play games on the computer. We play with two computer bots so there are four players. We have to make sure we don't go one after the other or there is bound to be trouble.

This is a step above Snap and Fish but still not as difficult as bridge. And this is a simpler version than some canasta variants but there are still some strategic moves. I wouldn't want to play bridge. That would be beyond me.
