Use for an old sock

It’s sometimes surprising the things that can be found on YouTube. Little One, who has reasonably long hair, wanted me to put it into a bun for her. Well I’m not the greatest hair-dresser, and I have never really tried to make a bun for myself. I had never even realised that those people you see with a perfect bun (Olympic gymnasts and ballet dancers, for example) probably don’t actually have that much hair in real life and use some sort of former. I tried different approaches with her hair, putting it into a ponytail or a plait first, then coiling it around, but it never stayed in place properly for very long no matter how many hairpins I used. Next I tried using a purchased ‘bun maker’ that looked like a ready-made bun of fake hair, but that was too heavy so it tended to slip and wobble about, and the fake 'hair' would show through and wasn’t a perfect colour match. Finally I thought of looking for tips on YouTube, and I found some videos that showed how to easily make a bun using the top of an old sock. I was sceptical, but figured I may as well try. I didn’t have any suitably-coloured old socks, but I did have a worn out knitted glove in a pale beige sort of colour, so I cut the cuff part off that and tried it. To my surprise it really does work like a charm! Each time I do it I can’t really believe that it’s going to work this time–it always begins as a messy lump with strands sticking out everywhere–but it does! The result looks really good, it doesn’t flop or slip, it doesn’t need too many pins, and it stays in place all through the school day even with running about at play times. It works and it was the only way I could find years ago when I had very long (and a lot of) hair and I wanted a bun. All other system failed, my hair was too heavy. I like the colour of your daughter's hair.

I was surprised but as you say it is effective! Thank you, the colour changes along the length, the top is a light brown but the bottom is an amazing light gold!

@Fleura I was also darker at the top, now it's silver grey.

@LadyDuck I used to have mid-brown hair, now it's practically white!

Can you provide that link? . May be I can use it for myself. I have grown my hair now and it is now shoulder length.

I can't remember the exact one but it was similar to this I didn't use hairspray and I didn't even fasten the ponytail first and it still worked really well. There are quite a lot of similar videos out there, some use a longer sock rolled up into a bun shape before you start to make it look bigger.

That is a wonderful discovery. As the Nanny of twin girls I may find this information handy in a few years when their hair grows.

@Fleura I am going to mention this to our daughter-in-law as it might be something that she could do with her own hair. She will have alot less time to get ready when she returns to work after her maternity leave.

It's one of those things that you don't really believe will work - but then it does!

It's not perfect but it's pretty good - but the main thing is that it stays firmly in place all day!

Thanks, it's not perfect but the most important thing is that it stays in place! And perhaps I will get better with practice!

I know what you say about being surprised every time it actually works. My Mum wore a bun most of her life but eventually had her hair cut in her 90s. She managed to do it with her own hair and didn't need a former - or an old sock!!

All these things I didn't know. Luckily my hair doesn't need to be put in a bun!
