Weird Thoughts At A 'Wake.

They call it a celebration of the deceased person's life - but is it really? Or perhaps just an opportunity to eat, drink and have fun. Last weekend my brother-in-law was finally laid to rest. The night before the funeral there was the traditional 'Wake held on the premises. For those who do not know , a Wake is an event happening the night before the funeral, where family members and close friends gather to pay their respects to their loved one. The Wake may take different forms depending on culture , traditions or where you live. The Wake held for my brother-law was the popular kind held in most Caribbean countries - music, drinks and food.. At least the music played at his wake was mostly gospel. I imagined myself attending my own Wake and watching family, friends and persons l have never met, drinking, eating and seemingly having fun " celebrating my death". I won't be happy. Would you? Have you ever attended a Wake? Pixabay image.

I have unfortunately been to my share of wakes. They are all different. Lately they are called a celebration of life. Sounds nice.

@Kandae11 With the family and friends I have lost, I can't say the same. Too many for me.

@CarolDM most of my extended family live all over the world - otherwise it would have been the same for me. It is really sad losing family or close friends.

In Latvia, the tradition is to lay the person to rest and then gather at a house or restaurant for food and drink. I think it is nice to sit and discuss the life of the person. When my husband passed my stepdaughter took care of the details and she had his favorite Latvian songs playing. I swear all through that I could feel his presence. For myself, I would like a rock and roll party of all my favorite oldies so I can watch from above and enjoy.

@Kandae11 well such loud music might be a bit much but at my husband's wake the music was tastefully played in the background, of course, making me want to cry, but so be it, and even if I had someone threw me a rock and roll party my instructions would be at a normal decibel level. I have never liked music at ear splitting sound,

I had not attended a traditional wake but I have attended an open coffin on several occasions. It is also a tradition in Ireland to have a very musical wake. RIP your dear brother in law.

I see. So Ireland has a similar kind of wake. Hopefully the music is not quite as loud.

@Kandae11 yes I agree. A party atmosphere would probably upset me too

I've been to a few wakes. Some were sad, and some were happy. I think I would be happy. Why? I'll be with Jesus.

I've attended quite a few I guess. Mostly they are quite sad occasions.

I've been to a couple of wakes. Some more festive than others, but usually there were people exchanging stories about the one who had passed.

I think that is the way it is meant to be - sharing memories about the one who has passed.
