Scam Artists

We all know them. We get their calls. How about when you least expect it, like when you contact a company, Amazon, and chat with their customer support because Alexa isn't working with the new modem and router, and they put you in touch with a person who then calls you? This happened to me. I spent three days talking to this guy getting his help and then the scam. He mentioned fees and having another tech guy look at my problem. All in the name of Amazon support. Will this put me off Amazon? No. My books are there. I also like their prices. I just won't contact customer support and chat with anyone again. I had a feeling about his ploy when he told me he was from Dubai. What did I do? I recovered my computer back to the factory settings. I had the option to leave my files intact. Good thing because I would be in tears if I lost all my work. I also blocked his number. Alexa still doesn't work, though I downloaded Alexa to my computer instead of trying to work with the Echo Dot. So, I do have that option. I also have Alexa on my phone if I want to use it. Lesson learned. If I can't figure it out myself, then it's time to let it go. I really liked Alexa. She was my calendar. It looks like I'll need to get a planner and use it. I've had planners in the past, but I never used them. Change is in the air. Have you ever contacted someone only to find out they were a scammer? Thanks for reading. The image belongs to me.

I've come close to falling for scams, but setting up the echo isn't that hard. I am sure, if you really wanted to, a video chat with a friend can help you trouble shoot it.

@just4him That's always an option. Just be sure to disable the 'Alexa' command before playing any how to videos. Sometimes devices can be triggered if they hear what they think is the command coming from any source. It used to trigger so often on my Dell, I had to disable it. I couldn't have it going off every time I tried to read or write anything.

I know it's not hard. I did it the first time I got it. Now with the new router and modem, it's impossible. Maybe I can find help on YouTube.

I'm sorry that happened to you. No, I haven't had that happen. I normally don't call tech support. The only time I've needed tech support lately, I posted about the problem of talking with someone who doesn't know English but insisted she was speaking "perfect English". Unfortunately, that was all I could understand from her. I learned then to confine my tech support problems to text messages through my laptop... Accents don't matter when you're texting in English. I hope you get things figured out to suit you. But there is a reason I don't allow things like Alexa to run on any of my electronics.

@just4him We have a digital times that has a magnet on it for cooking. I just carry it to my room when the food is going to take a while. I don't listen to music. Appointments are on my phone.

@just4him Yeah, I'm not interested in music. I'd rather have silence.

I have turned off my phone and the calls are monitored on my cell, many automatically go to spam.

@CarolDM Before I changed my number, I got a lot of them. Then with the past election, the phone rang and when I looked at the number, I knew it was political and didn't bother answering it. It's been quiet again since the election.

Sorry to hear that, glad you didn't lose your work...that would be devastating I know. My mom did deal with a scammer sometime last year. She thought they charged her for some virus protection for the computer and was trying to get a refund...the guy wanted to see video of her computer when she said she didn't have a computer that worked for the virus protection. Then he wanted her bank info and all that and he'd send her 1000 dollars if she sent like 100. Yeah, that was very sketchy

@just4him Yeah he did, luckily I figured out it was a scam before he gave her any real info.

I'm a bit confused, you say Amazon tech support put you in touch with a scammer? But glad you got away and managed to sort things out mostly.

That's what I said. Thank you. I'm glad I got it figured out, though I still don't have my Alexa working with my Internet.
