I got myself into gear eventually

After a bit of a slow start, I actually did a lot today. I made biscuits/cookies and some bacon/cheese straws to take to my BILs tomorrow for his birthday bash. I’ve done some laundry and the ironing, made some dressing for a salad for tomorrow and found some paperwork I needed. I’ve dead-headed the roses but I dodged vacuuming. That might get done tomorrow; otherwise it can wait until another day. We’ve been shopping and braved all the crowds. I’ve also done the ironing. One of the items I ironed, probably for the last time, is the raggedy handkerchief you can see in the photo. When I was growing up, we didn’t have a lot of money and poor old Dad often got hankies for Christmas. His name was Norm and this hankie would have been his. He died in 2000 and it would have been a long time before that, that I bought him hankies. But of course, they might have been a gift from someone else though I can’t think who. Soon it will be wine o’clock and we’ll wind down for the day.

Don't tell her that yet! It's only around 5:30 pm where she lives in Australia, I believe.

@DaddyEvil No way, it's 5:30 pm in Hong Kong now. Australia is 3 or 4 hours ahead of us.

@Beestring You are correct. Sydney is 3 hours ahead of HK. But Western Australia is in the same time zone as HK.

It sounds like you should have started drinking early this morning and taken an all day nap instead. I remember mom hated running dad's hankies through the laundry. She's make up a small load for them by themselves. She couldn't stand the thought of ... uhm... anything from them... getting on anything else. She definitely wouldn't have ironed them!

I know exactly what you're saying but our hankies are never gross. If we have colds, we use tissues at home. My nose runs like a tap when I have a cold and I use toilet paper to save on tissues.

@JudyEv When dad was still alive, we couldn't afford tissues, if they were even a thing back then... Uhm... Dad passed away when I was 15. I'm 59 now, so 44 years ago. Hang on a second... Tissues were definitely invented well before then but I don't remember us using them until around the time I moved out of mom's house, so around 18 years old. We don't get colds very often but yup, we use toilet paper when we have runny noses, too.

@DaddyEvil My Mum never bought tissues and for many years we didn't buy toilet paper.

I could keep it but it wouldn't mean much to anyone else. We have two sons but no grandchildren. The son that might want it, his wife would see it as full of germs or whatever so probably best just to oust it.

@JudyEv That was nice of you to make those things for the birthday. That is nice that you have the hankie for the memory of your Dad. I am sorry he is gone from your life.

I got my dad monogrammed hankies one year. He used to suffer from hay fever and carried them all the time.

I always have a hanky in my pocket. Tissues would normally last me no time at all.

Aw, bless Judy..thank you for sharing your dear Father's hankie with us. You had reminded me also of my Father, and that we often also gave him a box of new hankies for Christmas. RIP both

It was hard to come up with a good gift idea for fathers, when you only had a small amount of money. We did better later with gifts.

I also ironed yesterday. I still have some handkerchiefs with the initials, we used to have them in our purse when I was young. When we offered hankies as a gift, we always added a little coin in the package. There is the superstition that hankies brings tears, but if you pay for them it's fine. The person who receives the package gives you back the coin, so they are "paid" and they do not risk bad luck.

@JudyEv - Here in Switzerland they used to sell really pretty gift box with embroidered handkerchiefs, on top of the box there was a small bag containing 1 cent, so the one who received the gift was ready to "pay for it". I still have one of those boxes... I kept the cent.

What a quaint tradition. I hadn't heard of that. When we bought the motor-home in Ireland, the man gave us back a note saying it was for good luck.

I might keep it a while longer but really, it's just leaving it for someone else to toss out.
