My Internet security expires soon

I have Kaspersky Internet Security installed on my laptop. I recently received an email that it will automatically renew and I will be charged $127.99 (plus any taxes) to my credit card. I’m not sure if it’s for a year or two years but it seems a lot so I decided to cancel the automatic renewal. My current subscription expires beginning of January ’23 if I’m correct. It’s not a good idea to be without protection so I have to figure out what to do. Renew this manually (not sure if price will be the same) or find something else. But what?

I do not need to purchase any protection as I have a chromebook. I hope you will not need to buy any. Surely aren't there some free ones?

Perhaps there may be free ones. Heck, I think spectrum offers anti-virus for free if you have their services. I guess I can look into that.

@lovebuglena Do Lena, why spend money as I know you don't like to when unnecessary

@RebeccasFarm there’s a part of me that’s worried... if I have no protection and end up with a virus.

If I want to be honest, depending on the OS (Mac or Windows) both come with built-in security that is just as good, if not better than any third-party service you might have installed on your system. Third-party anti-virus services are in it to make money, and if they are not clear to you how much you'll be charged and for how long, that's a red flag it could be a scam product. You're welcome to do your research more on this topic, but I've had professionals tell me that third-party anti-virus protection is a waste of money.

@lovebuglena It's called Windows defender, and it has all the things that any normal service would charge you for.

@kaylachan and it protects against viruses you can potentially get from browsing the Internet?

I’ve had kaspersky for some years now. Last time renewal was for 2 years. Not sure what this time would’ve been. I didn’t see that info but probably because I didn’t look in the right place. What built-in security does windows come with? I’m not aware of that.

If I had to change security companies, I'd go with Norton. You might check them out. I'm with Vipre. Years ago I purchased a one-time-charge security system and VPN. So far it's been pretty good. They now charge a yearly fee for new subscribers. Good luck.

Never heard of vipre. I think I saw that spectrum offers antivirus or internet security or whatever it’s called and at no charge. Have to check that out as we have spectrum.

@LindaOHio haven’t checked yet but if you log in to your online spectrum account there is probably info about that.

@lovebuglena We have Spectrum too. I thought that we were already getting the protection. Please let me know what you find out.
