Thyme that no one had access to

We were on our sight seeing spree in New Zealand and the bus that took us was on the high way. The driver who also acted as a guide would be busy with his running commentary when he posed a question about what was the name of that green stuff that was growing on the hill skirting the road. Since none of us could give the answer he told us it was thyme. He stopped the bus and we all got photos of that hill as the background. Here is mine. That took me to a stanza in the poem 'Elegy in country church yard' by Thomas Gray “Full many a gem of purest ray serene The dark unfathomed caves of ocean bear: Full many a flower is born to blush unseen And waste its sweetness on the desert air"

That's amazing that the thyme is growing wild there.

I keep getting some plants in my garden and someone the other day told me that quite a few are edible.

@JudyEv Even if we were told that those that grow in our garden can be eaten we have never done that.

@allknowing There seems a lot of plants can be eaten but you can't afford to get it wrong.

That's a great view. Isn't time used in cooking in India? Just curious. The poem is great and thought-provoking. I wish I could write verses like that.

Thyme does not grow here. And you cannot compete with a great poet like Thomas Gray

Thyme growing wild just seems like such a big waste.

There must be so many other edible plants growing in the wild - a waste

I’ve always loved that poem. All the green doesn’t look like thyme I know. It looks more like small shrubbery

All the green may not look like Thyme but most did and the driver I suppose knew what he was talking about.

@allknowing There could be different species of thyme. I haven’t studied it. Thyme I’ve grown in my garden were-more sparce and spindly.

@RubyHawk One can only see it from a distance and once again the driver who is a resident o NZ surely knows what he is talking
