Prelude - the bit before the hard part

I wrote about some alternative and funny meanings for Italian music terms. Here are a few more. I’ll give the correct meaning/explanation first then the hopefully funny meaning. Crescendo means ‘gradually becoming louder’ which could also mean ‘testing frustration level of the neighbours’. ‘Quavers’ are notes which have a short time span so they are ‘quick’ notes. They are also what you have before a lesson if you haven’t practiced enough. ‘Ritartando’ is an instruction for the music to gradually become slower. It could also be the bit before the bit you can’t play properly yet. And finally, one which always makes me smile – prelude and fugue. These usually go together as two movements. The prelude is basically an introductory piece and easier than the often notoriously difficult fugue. So the fugue is the ‘hard part’ and the prelude ‘the part before the hard part’. The photo is another one of our piano taken last year and dressed up for Christmas.

That’s a good way of looking at it. It’s also the frustrating thing: “hey, Mozart, why can’t the whole thing be this simple????!!”

@JudyEv — I love watching Victor Borge videos, and his ability to play AND be funny at the same time was amazing. Still is.

@FourWalls He is incredible and so funny! But, just sometimes, I wish he'd play the whole of something and not just parts.

When I hear some of the virtuoso pianists, I wonder how they can get so many notes out with just 10 fingers.

The piano looks pretty! Crescendo makes me think of something falling and breaking like the glass dessert dish my husband gave the baby to eat her ice cream out of after dinner today

@JudyEv nope we’ll it was here when I moved in so it was my grandmothers but it wasn’t part of a set or anything probably just an extra one she had. Not a big deal.

Crescendo would fit a breaking dish pretty well. I hope it wasn't an heirloom. I guess not seeing you've put a smiley face.

Crescere in Italian means "to grow" crescendo is getting bigger, I understand that they used this word for becoming louder as not another better word exists.

@JudyEv Both decrescendo and diminuendo literally mean "becoming smaller", but there is not a specific Italian term to say becoming softer only using one word.

I guess that is so. So decrescendo and diminuendo both mean 'gradually becoming softer'. Do those meanings fit well with their origins?

@judyev I wonder why it has come to pass that psychologists have adopted the term ‘fugue’ to refer to a state of temporary amnesia? A distressing state indeed.

I didn't know that. I've heard of being in a 'fug' but not 'fugue'.

I can so relate to the crescendo. Too funny. My cats know how to push my buttons. This photo would make a nice greeting card.
