Something I Haven't Tried

"Chestnuts roasting on an open fire" is the opening line of the lyrics of "The Christmas Song" sung by Nat King Cole. Besides it being a lovely favorite holiday tune it makes me wonder each time I hear it about chestnuts. I have never had any and I wonder if they are bland, savory, or what. Have any of you ever had them? Are they tasty or what? I added the song so you can enjoy it.

When I was a kid, we bought roasted chestnuts from a vendor outside the Japanese markets (maybe many Asian markets had them?). So we looked forward to those market trips that were a wee bit far from us. When warm they are sweet. My mom used to chop them up and put them in stuffing for the Thanksgiving or Christmas turkey.

I'd like to try them in my stuffing.

Roasting them slowly would be the way to go.

I love roasted chestnuts. They are soft and sweet when roasted.

I seem to recall a friend once buying some and getting me to try them. But I don't recall what they tasted like or if I liked them or not.

When I lived at home we used to buy them. We cut a slit in the outer covering, heated up the oven and roasted them directly on the bottom of the oven. I remember them being quite tasty. I really don't remember the exact flavor.
