making the best of things

Despite the German Holiday Market getting canceled today, we still went over to the German immersion school where they were selling the souvenir Glühwein mugs and beer steins that they would have sold at the market, as well as Lebkuchen, Stollen, and many handmade wooden ornaments from Germany. They were sold out of bratwurst and hot dogs by the time we got there, but that's ok. We can find those any day of the week! Afterward, Otto and I went to a Biergarten called Ludwig's and had lunch instead of going later tonight so we wouldn't have to go out in the rain in the dark. I ordered the beef goulash with spätzle and red cabbage (as well as a mug of Glühwein), and he had the Jägerschnitzel with spätzle and lingonberry jam. We also picked up a bottle of their housemade Glühwein and a loaf of their housemade Stollen to enjoy at Christmas. It wasn't the day we had in mind, but it was still nice. Hopefully next year the weather will be more cooperative!

It sounds like a very good lunch! I'm glad you went in the afternoon instead of at night when it was raining.

I'm sure he and Krampus both would have appeared at the event if it had not been canceled.

It was absolutely delicious. I forgot to mention that Otto ordered some spätzle cheese croquettes for us to share as an appetizer, which are kind of like a German variation on mac & cheese bites. I don't know how authentic they are, but they were tasty and fun to try.

So am I! We had both been looking forward to the weekend so much and were devastated that the event was canceled. I'm glad we were able to salvage the day anyway.

Me too. We were disappointed to miss out on the market, but the important part was spending time together.

@popciclecold According to my weather app, we're due for another downpour in the next half hour. We just threw more clover seed onto the lawn.

It sounds like it was a decent day anyway. One of my cousin's has been posting pics on FB of his trips to the German Markets, Austria, and Budpest..pretty interesting. Maybe I should add the German markets in Germany to my bucket list.

They are on my bucket list! We're planning to take a tour of Germany and Austria sometime in the next two years, and I'm trying to time it so we can be there during the Christmas market season (but without missing Thanksgiving and Christmas here).

I should make a Stollen, but I am not really in the mood. I often make spätzle to serve with dishes with sauce, they are a lot easier (and faster) to make than regular egg pasta.

My grandma made rivels, which is a Pennsylvania Dutch version of spätzle and a little easier to make without a spätzlepresse. The dough is a little bit stiffer and is cut into tiny pieces rather than pressed through the spätzlepresse or sieve. I think this will be our first year having a fresh Stollen rather than one that was manufactured and packaged and shipped across the seas.

@spiderdust Knöpfli are also similar to spätzli but more botton shaped. My husband likes the stollen without the marzipan bar, I could prepare one for him.

@LadyDuck I have to admit, the marzipan is one of my favorite parts.
