Do you send/ give Chrismas cards?

If you celebrate Christmas, do you send Christmas cards to friends and family? Or did you in the past and no longer do? I know some people who previously sent cards have now stopped this custom, some because they just consider it a waste of time and money, and some because they consider it a wasteful and non-eco-friendly use of resources. But I still send them (at least I normally do! This year is a different story). So why, you may wonder, do I continue to indulge in such a wasteful and expensive tradition? Well for me I don’t see it that way. As far as expense goes, I always buy charity cards so I know my money is going to support a good cause. And I make sure they actually come direct from whatever organisation I choose, not just the so-called ‘charity cards’ where 5% of the price goes to a selection of charities. And on top of that I generally buy most of them in January when they are 50% off! And as regards the wasteful use of resources making the cards just to throw them away – well as you would expect from me I don’t just throw them away. First of all they are all hung up to decorate our home over Christmas. Then afterwards they are cut up and the pictures used to make gift tags for next year, or for other decorative uses. Plain scraps of card and the backs of envelopes are saved to use for shopping lists and the like (for which we would use other paper if we didn’t have these). So in my opinion sending Christmas cards is no more wasteful than any other use of paper, and receiving a real card (as opposed to an e-card) is a permanent and tangible thing. Sure I could send e-cards, and sometimes do, and they can often be much fancier and more technologically-advanced than a simple piece of card – but the fact is that you have to be sitting at your computer or using your phone to see an e-card, while a simple old-fashioned card can be stuck up somewhere and every time you look up, there it is to remind you that someone thought of you, no technology required. So yes I’m going to carry on sending cards for the foreseeable future, what about you? All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2022.

This year we sent no cards although l had written them out. We have cut down on the amount we send due to the cost of postage. The only cards that are sacrosanct are those to my elderly aunts. I will always send to them. Unfortunately both my wife & I were ill for three weeks by time l went to the post office the lady laughed & said they will not get them this year because of the strikes. So l brought them home & put them back in the box for next year instead! I hope you had a lovely Christmas.

I haven't sent cards in years. Somewhere in my mid-thirties, I switched to sending ecards and in my early fifties, I stopped sending cards at all. I normally send texts to the people I know and keep in touch with... I sent a dozen texts this morning and three Whatsapp texts yesterday to friends in India. And, I'm going to use your discussion to send one more to a friend here in the US... @hora_fugit I hope you've had a wonderful Christmas! I hope you had a good Christmas, too, Fleur.

I have never sent cards. However I think e-card can't be mentioned in the same breath with a real card .A real card with friend's handwriting on it has great sentimental value.

I love sending Christmas cards. The ones I receive back put a smile on my face that someone thought about me sending them. I get that fuzzy happy feeling when I look at them. I tried putting them up this year, but they fell off the wall. It was a good idea that didn't work out. I still want to get them up somehow. I love looking at them. One year, many years ago when my children were little, I cut the pictures apart and made a tree out of them on the wall. That time they didn't fall off the wall and made a lovely decoration. Those were older cards, not current ones. I never throw away cards. I have them saved and see them for the cherished memories they bring.

This year we received a mix of cards, Christmas emails, a phone call and a couple of letters rather than cards. Some of my older friends aren't really into technology so I'll continue to send them cards. If they're people we don't see/hear from except at Christmastime, then I might include a letter as well.

I used to give New Year cards to my teachers and friends when I was in school and college. I used to make my own cards but now we have the phone.

Before the advent of the internet I would make it a habit to send my friends Christmas cards starting November and I also would receive some. If I can remember the last card I got was decades ago.

I sent out Christmas cards for years and years. One day I realized that I didn't have to do that, and my daughter said the same thing--mom, people just throw them away. Unless it's a picture of family, I toss them, too. Or I donate the used cards to nursing home or senior home groups who make things out of them. What I previously spent on cards as far as the cost of the cards and the postage, I now donate to something I feel strongly about, or I use the money to 'adopt' a senior for Christmas so they are remembered.

I send a few to my friends living overseas. They prefer receiving physical cards.

I do not send and receive anymore... just because all those to whom I used to send the cards (and to receive from) are no more.

@fleura I just don’t send them. Not because they’re too expensive etc but just because I don’t. At last no-one sends them to me. It’s just the way I’m wired.
