Mother made these year after year

After a hectic Christmas - it was father's birthday too - on every New Year mother made these delicacies. It was kind of a tradition with her We call them cones The cones are made from jack fruit leaves which she took from the tree - we had four trees. She then ground rice to a past and lined the cones with it and stuffed the cones with a mixture of coconut, jaggery and cardamom. The mixture was then sealed with rice paste. They were then steamed. I have made these but on New Year's day. Do you have any New Year tradition?

No New Years tradition. We like to stay home and off the streets because of drunk people that might be on the roads.

Your mother is very skillful. Here sometimes we will use the lotus and other leaves to make the food. I am not that talented. I bought such kind of mould to make and the result is better.

This was years ago. I lost my mother when she was in her nineties.

I assume these were eaten warm after they are steamed? It doesn’t sound very appealing to me. I don’t have a New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day tradition.

This sounds to be a good delicacy. We do not have New Year's traditional cake, but we eat lentils and round fruits (grapes, pomegranate) for good luck and money.

No New Year tradition that l recall. However one of the snacks we make anytime of year is called conkie. It is made of cornmeal, coconut, cinnamon, sugar, nutmeg. The mixture is wrapped in individual squares of banana leaf , tied with string and steamed in a pot.

I like to eat black eyed peas. Today I have a pork roast cooking. I will have black eyed peas, sauerkraut and corn bread with it.

I had never made these. They look so tasty. No tradition right now or ever really. Always moving it seems.

Fascinating. Those sound like the sweet version of stuffed cabbage rolls.

While the stuffed cabbage rolls are eaten with the cabbage here the leaves are discarded.

@Fleura Those leaves are just to hold the cones.

Those look interesting. They remind me of the Greek stuffed vine leaves (dolmades) but they have a savoury filling.

@allknowing Yes, you just eat the whole rolled-up leaf with the stuffing (which is a savoury mix of rice with a few additions such as pine nuts, raisins, maybe a bit of cheese or something).

Our family always made black-eyes peas, cornbread and pork chops. Sometimes cole slaw as well.
