Well for the first meals posting of 2023, I'm still a little miffed. Hubs didn't start the pork roast until 7:15; and we didn't eat until 11:30 pm. It was almost January 2! At least the meal was very good. How was the first day of the New Year for you? 78 days until spring! Breakfast - Oatmeal square Lunch - Cabbage rolls and mashed potatoes Snack - Oatmeal square Dinner - Pork roast, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, broccoli and rolls Dessert - Chocolate pie What did you eat yesterday? I remember for one of the Jewish holidays hubby decided to make lamb shank and he decided to do that very late in the day so we sat down to eat it after midnight at some point. Our first meal on Jan. 1st was holodets aka jellied meat and a salad of radish, tomato, scallion, and shallots in sour cream. And then we had coffee with goat cheese that we topped with passion fruit preserves.

Sounds...interesting. What is "jelled meat"?

@LindaOHio It is really good. The jelly is the best part.

I don't think I could handle jellied meat.

We had a very quiet first day of the year. We had lentils at lunch and a very light dinner. We went to bed early.

I love lentil soup. A lot of MyLotters turn in early!

@LindaOHio We make stewed lentils, not a lentil soup. My husband likes lentil soup, I prefer stewed lentils.

It was very quiet here... I cooked several different things that could be frozen or that would be fine in the fridge for several days for meals without me needing to cook again soon. I made scrambled eggs with onions, bell peppers and mushrooms for breakfast, Cheddar cheese noodles with chicken for lunch and taquitos and two oranges for supper. I hope you have a nice day.

Are cheddar cheese noodles similar to macaroni & cheese?

@Marty1 They're so good. I like mine with bacon when we're traveling. I like Spam when we're at home.

@LindaOHio As a group, we're too smart of force ourselves to stay up, or go to Times Square to freeze, or whatever.

@TheHorse I don't get the mindset of going to Times Square and standing in the rain or cold to see the ball drop. I can do that just fine from my recliner.

Yesterday I made Hoppin' John and collards with cornbread on the side. It was a much more carby meal than I usually have these days, but it's a popular dish with at least half of my family. Tonight I'm making the last of the Hoppin' John into soup, and I think everyone else will have leftover ham fried rice.

@LindaOHio It's a dish made with black-eyed peas and rice and a smoky meat (usually bacon or a ham hock, but I've seen it made with smoked turkey), although it can be made as a vegetarian dish too. It's a traditional good luck food for New Year's Day in the southern United States, especially if it's served alongside greens.

I started New Year's Day with homemade sausage rolls that my missus made for breakfast. Had some dry roasted peanuts as a snack later in the morning. Lunch was delayed, and Dinner came early. The two were combined into lasagna served with tossed salad and garlic bread. We had birthday cake for dessert in honor of Son2's girlfriend's birthday on 12/30. Later in the evening, I had a few peppermint Kisses and some more peanuts.

Very rarely. I can't cook or bake anymore; and he is getting limited as to what he can do. We need to win the lottery and hire a chef!

My wife would have killed me. lol. She complains enough that we eat around 730pm most nights. Glad the food was good, though. I made a deviled egg pasta salad and cooked up some buttered peas and served it with braised pork steaks. It was good eats, and we ate it much earlier than you did. lol

@Marty1 It is basically a pasta salad made with the same yolk mixture you'd make for deviled eggs tossed in. It's really good.
