A big surprise!

This evening, as I was cycling home at about 8:30 pm, I had a big surprise – I passed two police officers walking along beside one of the main roads from the centre of town. I can’t remember the last time I saw a police officer actually ‘on the beat’ – in fact I was just talking about this the other day when we happened to be watching an episode of ‘Jeeves and Wooster’ and Wooster is arrested for stealing a policemen’s helmet. It’s so long since I saw one in real life that I couldn’t actually remember whether police officers still wore the traditional helmets! Maybe they don’t, and these two ‘officers’ were actually just civilians in fancy dress? But they certainly looked the part. As I cycled up behind them I was wondering whether I should stop and take a photo, but then just as I got close they stopped and looked around in preparation for crossing the road. They must have seen me staring open-mouthed at them because they smiled and said hello. I wonder if this is some sort of new initiative or was it just a freak event? I didn’t get a photo so I have lifted this one from Hampshire Constabulary. All rights reserved. © Text copyright Fleur 2023.

@Fleura I would like to see everyplace get back to that. Things were better when you knew who they were. Not just some face in a car

@wolfgirl569 Exactly. We rarely see police officers except sometimes speeding past. As a child we were always told that if we got lost or needed help in town we should look for a policeman, can you imagine? Nowadays we would be looking for weeks!

Isn't drinking before riding a bike illegal in your country?

@Fleura Oh, wow... Ice cream that can cause drunkenness... I wonder if that's a first?

I was perfectly sober, I was just coming home from volunteering at the theatre and we're not allowed to drink or be drunk on duty! I don't think ice-cream causes hallucinations.

That is interesting. I think it might be good that police officers show themselves around town now and then,

Everyone (except the criminals I suppose) thinks it a good idea, but nowadays they have become a rare species.

@fleura We didn’t see police officers ‘on the beat’ for a long time here because people kept shooting at them. They tried a come back a few years ago but then gave up.

They don't have any such excuse here.

Had to smile at 'open-mouthed'. That probably got recounted to all their mates back at base.

Not much shocks me but I think I did actually have my mouth hanging open at that moment!

I don't see cops often, but I do hear their cars from time to time.
