I didn’t know dogs could do that!

Well actually I never even thought about it until now. My friends have a Golden Retriever (pictured) called Fred and they like to try teaching him new things every now and then. Recently they have tried to teach him to wink, but they were not sure if they had really succeeded. But at the weekend they went out for a walk followed by tea and cake. They were just sitting in the tea shop relaxing after their walk when a woman came to their table and politely asked ‘Excuse me but I wonder if you could resolve an argument between me and my husband. I’m sure your dog has been winking at me but my husband says that dogs can’t wink.’ It turned out that Fred had been winking at her from under the table in the hope of getting a biscuit. Obviously the training had worked! And she did give him a biscuit so that has just reinforced the behaviour and now no doubt he will be surprising other unsuspecting strangers! That's amazing! I didn't know that either but even more amazing is how did they manage to teach him?

Imitation, timing and bribery I think!

@Fleura The timing bit might be essential but pretty tricky I'd say.

I guess they choose to go to the ones that do welcome dogs.

@fleura I might start winking at ladies in cafes to see if I get free biscuits.

Unfortunately I don't think it works the same way for humans. If you start jumping up at random people they don't think it's cute.

Should have said, 'Are you mad woman, dogs don't blink!' Still, a neat trick and plenty of biccies in the future, me thinks

That would be mean But I think he was also really pleased to have confirmation that his teaching had worked!

Golden retriever dogs are glutton. The one of my niece had learnt some tricks to obtain a biscuit or a piece of what we had in our dish while we were sitting at the table.
