In the Philippines at present, onions are worth gold, which you won't believe. It all began at the beginning of this month, and the price per kilogram is currently between Php 500 and Php 700 ($9.10 and $12.74). Due to this, I am rarely able to buy one piece. This onion bulb is essential to the flavor of a dish. Because the first two harvests were substandard and the onions currently being sold on the market are from the third harvest, the farmers were compelled to raise the price.
Do we share the same onion situation?

@MarieCoyle I haven't really checked the prices here, but I have not noticed a shortage.

Around the holidays there were a few times onions were hard to find here. I bought some extra when I found some, finally. Now we have them, but they of course have gone up some in price like all other produce has.

In 1998, Onion Prices drastically increased in Delhi state in India. A lot of public protests followed.
The Ruling State party changed the chief minister.
However, that did not help and the ruling party lost the state assembly elections held after some time. There have been some more instances of Onion price rise, and it always becomes a big political issue because Onions are consumed a lot by masses.
The Government's have to resort to Onion export ban and short term Onion imports to combat this situation.
Your Government should probably take similar steps although it hits Government finances for some time.

It sounds like some Filipinos are blaming the new president because of onion issue here. They claimed that it is worst because of the high price under his administration. I am not also sure if they are planning to have some onions to be imported here.

Wow! That's way too much! I'm sure most people just refuse to buy them.
Pretty and I use onions in almost everything we cook. Can you order onions cheaper from Amazon?

@MrDenata Onions are sooo good. Sometimes I slice up red, white and yellow onions, add a bit of spices to them and fry them to a golden brown color and just eat caramelized onions.

That is undoubtedly the case, and hoarding appears to be taking place to keep the price under check. We are all but confused about who can lower the pricing because importers are also attempting to influence because they can cut prices. Farmers are pleading with people not to import so they can survive, but they are unable to meet demand because buyers are trying to hoard in order to make a shortage and drive up the price.

Every year we have price rise in onion for few days but then it is brought under control soon. We had onion crisis and sky rocketing onion prices in 1998. And that caused a lot of protest and criticism for the government then. It lasted for few months and then few government rules and policies brought it under control.

@Shavkat For us it was in 1998, but government brought it under control. Since then it has never been so bad though we do see occasional price hike. But never to a concerning situation.
Onions are so important in cooking.. it's tough to go without them even for a single meal.

it is very expensive. here the price of onions is not that expensive, let alone buying directly from farmers the price can be negotiated again if you buy a lot.

@Shavkat This happened in India in the year 1999 in the BJP rule. They lost the next election and came back again after a few years and are still in the government but haven't raised the price of onions. However they have raised the prices of other essential commodities.

I use a lot of onions, they add flavor to so many dishes. I also chop and freeze some in small ziplocks. They have gone up in price here but not as bad as potatoes and we won't even talk about how much lettuce is now (ridiculous!).

I remembered my granny before. She used to put them on jars in the fridge. For me, it is a good practice. I will try to do this once the price of onions went down. It is a sad thing that I need to buy small onions for the meal tonight. I am glad that lettuce is not in the same situation here.
