Jack and his cage

In the photo, you can see Jack in his enclosure. Jack is a Major Mitchell cockatoo like one we looked after at a previous house-sit. However, Jack isn’t nearly as friendly as Jim and likes nothing better than to bite fingers. Thankfully we don’t need to go into his cage. We feed him thistles through the wire to show our good intentions. You can see some old iron wheels up against the trees. There is also an old wheelbarrow planed with succulents and more succulents and cacti around the base of the trees. The vegetation all helps the area look less hot and barren.

That breaks my heart to see Jack alone in a cage outside.

Jack always in his cage or you let him fly out once in a while?

We haven't let him out as he isn't familiar with us. His owners let him out sometimes.

Of course Jack isn't very friendly. He wants out of the cage.

The poor bird not being in the house. Does it get cold out there or overly hot.

He is much happier out there. The weather is very moderate and it's a much more natural environment for him.

You're right it does look rather barren. What do people grow out there?

Wheat and canola are the main crops or cereal/meadow hay for baling for stock feed. The ground is fertile enough if you have water.

@BarBaraPrz For crops they rely on the rain but if you want a garden you plant stuff then you water it and keep it watered.

Glad to see the bird in the great outdoors where they belong. It does look barren to me. At least they have some pretty trees dotting the yard.

The soil is fertile if it's watered. It's good bushfire wise to have some bare land around the actual house. There is quite a lot of garden.

It's a pity he's feisty. If he's not like that, he could have been enjoyed by anybody. I know that those who are tamed may live outside their cages.

@JudyEv Maybe that bird was traumatized or something that he doesn't want to be with anyone and just content himself alone in that cage.

I do not like birds being caged. Atleast the cage could have been large for Jack to fly around.

@JudyEv It is nothing but torture. I was on a holiday here in India a few years ago and that 5 star hotel had a bird sitting on the table of the Receptionist. The wings were clipped so that it could not fly.

I don't know how the owners get in and out. They must have worked out some way of doing it.

Many farmers keep the areas around the house and shed free of rubbish and with only a few trees. It's much safer during fire season.

It's a bit of a shame people feel the need to confine birds but, as cages go, this one is pretty good.

@CarolDM I don't know the background of this one but some have damaged wings or whatever (like Cotton). And you couldn't just release him where he is or the wild birds would attack him.
