A gardener came. Will he do it?

Today a man came and said that he was a gardener. He did not have any tools of his trade though but I´m not interested yet in having him cut the grass yet. I want to cut branches and lower down shrubs first.
After some time he finally told me how much he would charge me for the day and is was lower than most gardeners ask.
He was very warm but did not have a cellphone. And we finally agreed that he would come tomorrow as he wanted to come today. At the end of the conversation he asked me if I could give him a bit of money and I nicely told him that I did not have cash at all as my daughters brought me whatever I needed. I did not dare give him money before he worked for it. But I did tell him that I would give him lunch too.
I am not sure whether he´s a beggar or a very poor man who is desperate for money to eat. He did not want to come next week. He wanted to start as soon as possible. But I have been scammed before, I´m old and I live alone. So I have to be on guard.
I do hope that he´ll work well though. I will give him breakfast before he starts because my husband told me that nobody could work well with an empty stomach.
My husband always gave his workers some money at the beginning and told them to come to work the next day. Some of them never arrived. But the ones who did were devoted to him. And whenever he knew of a problem they had, he helped them out as much as he could.
So tomorrow I have a big question mark. Will Rodrigo, the gardener arrive? Or was he just someone who wanted money for a beer?
I explained what I wanted today and he said that he´d arrive at 9 am. We´ll see.

I´ll feed him at the garage and close the house doors. I have a nice table there.

@DianneN Absolutly. I don´t have much of a garden with Luna here. And now that I live alone, I care more about my few close friends and family than about the oil paintings that nobody cares about. I´m now in the process of letting go what is not essencial.

I know. I will first have him work at the front. Luna is not there but he can´t get into my house from there. And I´ll serve his lunch at the garage with the door to my house closed.

He said he´d come at 9am. So far he hasn´t come. And I´m so innocent that I went to the kitchen to prepare breakfast for him

I´ll be looking at him all the time with Luna at my side. And I will not let Luna come near him telling him that she bites. After all, who knows? She bites bones.
