In a recent study done by Consumer Reports, it has been found that dark chocolate has dangerous levels of both cadmium and lead. It has more of these in it because there are more chocolate or cacao beans in it. Such brands as Trader Joe's, Theo, and Hershey have these heavy metals in them. This can cause health issues for young children and pregnant women. The main concern with cadmium is that it accumulates in the body. It is absorbed into the bloodstream and can then mount up in the kidney, liver, and other organs. It can also affect fetal development in the placenta. Exposure over time can cause such health issues as anemia, weak bones, and kidney damage. Cadmium can also be found in some vegetables, nuts, or grains. Cadmium can be found in either soil or water that has been contaminated. The highest amount of these metals in chocolate bars tested were: Beyond Good Organic Pure Dark Chocolate, Alter Eco Organic Dark Chocolate Classic Blackout, and Pascha's Organic Very Dark Dark Chocolate. Ones with lead in them were: Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate, Hershey's Special Dark Mildly Sweet Chocolate, and Chocolove Strong Dark Chocolate.

Better to choose dark chocolate with 70% cocoa than 80%, the higher the cocoa percentage the highest the risk of heavy metals. About palm oil, better to read the ingredients before buying. I always put back EVERYTHING containing palm oil.

@arunima25 Palm oil is dangerous for our health and we should all boycott palm oil because it is the cause of the deforestation of the Amazon.

I am also very cautious about not getting anything with Palm oil. And I have to put so many things back to the shelf because most of these desserts and snacks items in the store have palm oil in them

That would give me a good feeling, knowing that I could no longer eat something that turns out to have some bad stuff in it anyway.

Less of everything is always best. They did not say how much chocolate one would have to consume a day for the cadmium to make any real impact. - less is best. I would be long gone before it could impact me in any way - l usually have 1 bar twice a year.

Being a diabetic, chocolates are rare treats for me. And when I have it , I have milk chocolates as they taste good. No talk about being healthy choice would buy me to try these bitter dark chocolates. Nothing bitter for me for a treat

Wow I had no idea. I really don’t think any sweets are very good for us to eat often to begin with. Everything in moderation.

Did not know about these issues. We rely on good brands not to peddle those that are injurious to consumers. Dark chocolate has been my refuge and weakness over the last few years. I go for 70% and I am not young anymore.
