Nursing home declared lady dead, but she wasn't.

You have to wonder about nursing homes now. I hear horror stories all the time about tales of neglect, residents missing meals and medications because the homes have no help, falling and calling out for help for hours, and so forthl The nurse practitioner declared this lady dead. She went to the funeral home, zipped into a plastic body bag. When they opened it up, she was gasping for breath! She did have dementia, but that's still traumatizing for anyone to go through. The thought of all of this is just heartbreaking. They need to pay more and do better, maybe that's part of the solution, I don't know...just know I hurt for her and her family.

This is unforgivable. The nursing home should be charged with a crime.

@porwest That's why I dread going into a nursing home.

I certainly would be very upset if it had happened to one of my loved ones. Unacceptable in every way.

@LadyDuck It's hard to believe in this day and age of advanced modern medicine this type of thing even happens, but I guess it really does.

That's awful - the poor woman! From what I have seen the past few months, I don't doubt nursing homes and other facilities as such are quite lacking .

@MarieCoyle My dad was in a rehab facility - it was more like a wannabe hospital - it was completely awful. My mother in law is in a ritzy senior home but even there they have been extremely short handed.

Even the good ones are terrible. Not enough staff, and many do not pay well at all, so they have a huge turnover in help.

@much2say Honestly, as much as these places charge per month, they ought to be able to pay their help very good wages, and retain their help. 6K-9K per month in some of them here, to sit alone and wait and wait to have a bit of attention. It's just not right.

It is shocking, but not necessarily unexpected from a nursing home. The problem is, many of these people are in these nursing homes because they could not afford to go to better quality long term care facilities. Nursing homes are understaffed and poorly run because they are grossly underfunded. Most of their income comes from governmental funds like Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security, and we all know how bad those programs are.

@MarieCoyle Sadly, more and more places are becoming like this.

@moffittjc I think it's going to come down to the way it used to be in the ''old'' days, that people are going to be cared for at home if at all possible.

A person has to wonder, does this happen more than we know? I imagine it does.

@MarieCoyle That's so shocking. There are inefficient doctors and careless nurses. It is they who reach a conclusion without proper investigation.

@Shivram59 Well, doctors and nurses in nursing homes and hospitals all seem to be short on sleep and after all, they are human and make mistakes, so I guess we should grant them a bit of grace.

One wonders how something like this could ever even happen. But it does. Among the many other horrors that go on in these places. I have always called them holding cells for people waiting to die. Families hardly ever visit or care. People are simply left to die, alone, and in less than perfect conditions. It is always very sad to me.
