A Little Unexpected Windfall

From time to time, companies either need to unload cash or something else happens that they feel more is due to shareholders than their typical dividend. They are most often referred to as "supplemental dividends." One such announcement was recently made by Ford Motor Company, who declared their usual current 15 cent quarterly dividend, but also announced a 65 cent per share supplemental dividend. So, that's a bit of an unexpected windfall. Also, a surprising one considering when Ford just reported earnings, showing it missed earnings targets by over $1 billion citing supply chain issues and supply costs. The supplemental dividend is in contrast a bit, being paid from strong cash flow, despite the earnings miss, and from monetization of their stake in Rivian. The stock itself may take a short term hit due to the missed earnings. but CEO Jim Farley has told shareholders he will be taking swift action to improve margins and reduce costs in order to better meet its financial objectives. As he put it, "It is something we MUST do. And immediately." Disclosure: Porwest owns shares in Ford Motor Company and intends to add future shares.

Happy for you. Windfalls can happen out of the blue. Stock prices can go up more than we expect and also go down catching us unaware to our chagrin.

Usually, if you done your "homework," you can find good reasons why a stock moves one way or another, and can better assess whether or not the moves are justified. When I am invested in a company it is never a one and done thing. I constantly reevaluate my position to make sure it lines up with my investment objectives and remains something to be invested in.

@Shiva49 I will never assign luck to getting rich. It happens. But those who earn it keep it. Those who run into it through luck? They die broke.

It is always nice when a little unexpected money comes our way. I will just reinvest it.

Everyone has money for investment. How do you think investors get the money? Investing the LITTLE bit they have and turning it into the LOT they have.

I don't own Ford shares directly, but they are included in some of my retirement funds, so I'm glad to see this news.

However indirect, yeah. You'll see some benefit. Or, did. lol This is an older post but I never like to leave a comment not attended to.

Has GM and the other big automakers released their financial statement yet? I’d be curious to see if any of them missed their earnings forecast due to supply chain and inflation issues. I have always been a big fan of Ford.

All the automakers are doing "well," but they are all experiencing at least some issues from supply chain, although the situation, at least for them, appears to be improving. Stellantis just reported record annual revenue and 4.47 billion euro special dividend to shareholders which would equate to 1.34 euros per share. Not publicly traded in the U.S. though.

Thank you. I even bought some more shares today. Not just for the dividend. But it will help. The dividend will be payable with an ex-div date of 2/10 payable 3/1. I will just reinvest it.
